Could someone recommend a boy scout knife or small multi-tool?

I've been considering purchasing one or the other for the versatility of having the extra tools. I've had SAKs in the past but I've found the scales to be rather flimsy and I'm not a great fan of plastic. I would like something small enough to carry some what as a pocket knife without it being too heavy in the pocket.

I would appreciate any and all comments any one may have.

Thanks,
Clay

Have you looked at the Leatherman Micra, Leatherman Squirt, SOG Crosscut/Crossgrip? If you want something a little bigger, have a look at the Leatherman Juice. Good luck!

Have you thought about a Victorinox Soldier, or one of their other metal-handled knives? Rock solid - they have a great rep here on the forum.

I love my Leatherman Juice. I think it's just about the right size, small enough to carry easily (I use a cheap nylon belt sheath although it can be carried easily in the pocket) and big enough to be usefull in a variety of jobs. Given the choice between an SAK and small multi-tool I'll take the tool everytime.

If you want a nice pocketable mulit-tool look at the leatherman juice they have several to choose from so you can pick the one that best serves your needs and you don't have to have certain tools that you would never use. Also, I was going to suggest the Victorinox Soldier but mnblade beat me to it. I just bought my first one of these at Target for a whopping $20 and I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the quality of this knife. I've owned the red handled SAK's before and was never really too impressed either, but this knife fells really solid and I just can't seem to put down! Good luck and God bless, Heath

What about a Pocket Power Plier by SOG? You can find them for about 40 dollars or so if you're lucky.

I too would recommend the Juice as well as the LM Super Tool. I have one of each and they are excellent. Good luck in your search.

This is a link to the Leatherman TOOL COMPARISON page. You can load up to three tools at once and compare their capabilities and size and weight.

I suggest you start with the Pulse and the Juice XE6 (the largest Juice model), and compare these two to the others, larger or smaller. Look for the tools you need and don't bother with one that has unneeded extras -- unless the size is still comfortable, which is why I recommend the Pulse. It has just about everything, including locking tools, and it's no bigger than the Juice.

Personally, I switch off between a SOG Powerlock and Victorinox Ranger, neither of which match your requirements. But I used to carry the Pulse, and liked it a lot. I just wanted a saw, which it didn't have. I had also picked up an XE6, which was a lot nicer than I thought it would be. Crisp action, even though the tools don't lock. They don't slip around easily. (My nephew's got it now :) )

...Already suggested, but if you are looking for small, get a SOG CrossCut (or CrossGrip if you want pliers rather than scissors). For something a little larger, and alot more "versatile", get either a SOG Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier or the slightly thinner SOG Pocket PowerPlier. (I carry both a CrossCut and a Deluxe Pocket PowerPlier as part of my "EDC", and I am very pleased with both of them.).

I'd look into Swiss Army Knives. You can get one that's the size of a Boy Scout Knife that will have some extra tools on it.For serious multi-tooling,start with the Leatherman link posted by Esav.;)

Lots of good advice already given above. I gotta chime in with the Juice S2, it's an excellent minimal multitool and my weekday EDC for a long time. Victorinox Soldier or Electrician would also serve you well if you don't need pliers, scissors, or phillips screwdriver.

i've gotta once again mention the juice line. one thing i've found very handy is if you are worried about it being to heavy in the pocket (although the smaller ones like the s2 aren't bad at all) you can get a lanyard thingie with a quick disconnect. basically a caribiner attaches to your pocket, and then webbing attaches to that which attaches to a quick disconnect, then more webbing and a split ring for the leatherman. good for keys or something like that too. i found mine at Galyans (a big sporting goods store) but they probably carry them other places or online. the other good thing is you can find them with a compass or a thermometer on them as well.

If you like scout knives, and are willing to go a little more money, I'd HIGHLY recommend the Premium Scout from A.G. Russell. It's a typical scout knife (can opener, bottle opener, couple screwdrivers), but the overall fit and finish are superb. Also, the mainblade is 154-CM, which sets it apart from most other knives in this category.

i don't have one but i'd second the agrussell suggestion as well, looks really quite nice and has a shackle for a lanyard (almost required if you're like me and lose stuff all the time  )

Pete

edit: let us know what you think of it if you do get one of the agrussel scout knives and let us know what you decide on either way.

Clay,
Had a nice post, with more informative text, but lost it when I clicked on a shortcut to check something. So this is the very abreviated version.

Soldier SAK and smaller multitools mentioned by several posters.

Try also the Farmer 91mm; thickness 14mm; Alox-Handles . One of the Victorinox Pioneer series. A favorite of many. Like mine! :D Also has a saw blade and keyring. Available from http://www.pizzini.at/shop/en-us/dept_2.html , here in the U.S., www.ekifeworks.com , etc. Same thicker blade as the Soldier.

When this is too much, see the great threads started by UnknownVT a/k/a Vincent Tseng, on the minimalist SAK's. For example the Bantam, about 6 mm thick, 84 mm long. One blade and THE combination tool.

Thanks for all of the great replies. The A.G. Russell really looks nice. I guess I've got some saving to do.

Thanks,
Clay
