Could the joints on a two blade knife( 317) be as strong as the joint on a single blade knife (110) ?

I like the idea of having a spare sharp blade (buck 317) that I can save for when I need it but my buddy says I am sacrificing strength to have two blades and the buck 110 would be more indestructible. I also notice that the 317 model was a lot more expensive than the 110. What can I infer from that ? They are both similarly large folding knives.......

The Two Blade hunting knives were made by almost everyone. They were the go to folding hunting knife until the 110 was released.

The Buck 317 was made by Camillus, I never heard of it being more expensive than a 110. At least not when they were in production.

They are plenty strong, you give up the safety of the blade lock, but gain the utility of a second blade.

edit to add: The 110 is clearly stronger, it is also clearly overbuilt for its intended purpose.

Multi bladed knives are probably not going to be as strong. Instead of a super thick piece of brass on each side of the blade like a 110 has, they have thinner liners that sandwich the blades. So I would say that they are not as strong. But.... what the heck are you going to be doing with a pocket knife that you would need it to be indestructible for? lol If you're prying on things like a Buck knife is a crowbar than sooner or later you will break your knife (any knife, especially a folder). Use it like a knife, not a hammer or prybar, and you will be fine.

Looks like you need a buck 317 to go in that picture. What are the make and model names of those knives in the picture. Which are still made ? I think the Buck 317 is discontinued.

I’ve never been willing to spend the money a 317 brings on the used market. It is a rebranded Camillus. I have a Camillus.

Top to bottom
My Father’s Western
My Grandfather’s Frontier
KA-BAR
Queen
Camillus
Schrade
Chicago Cutlery
Case

I don’t know the model numbers. I think the only one still made is possibly the Case?

My favorite is the Western it is svelte compared to the others.

Which of these are still made? Or what similar models are still available from whatever mfgr ?

Some interesting info can be found in this thread:

I think your buddy sounds like a guy I know...

Stronger how? It's rare for a knife to wear out in normal use. Abuse is another matter.

The only real difference is the number of blades. The handles look different, and are constructed differently, but I'd bet there isn't a lot of difference in strength. Nickel silver vs. brass hinge pin, probably very similar. The blades will snap with similar amounts of abuse.

My Grandpa carried a Schrade, and my dad carried a Western similar to the 317. I carry a two dot 110 while hunting. All these knives have dealt with a bunch of game, and none of them has ever let anyone down.

Theoretically a single blade might be stronger than a two blade but I’ve seen lots of two blade knives well over 100 years old still going strong. Like others have stated that in normal use it isn’t an issue. Abuse and taking them past their intended purpose will be more of an issue than the number of blades on one end.

What do you use it for? Edc? Or field work.

I love my folding hunters, but when I’m hunting I carry fixed blades. So maybe that is the better option for you. Buck still makes awesome fixed blades.

These type of threads always make me sad how we lost Camillus. Buck and Camillus enjoyed a symbiotic relationship for a long time. All of the American companies listed in my post are gone, except for Case. Case is not the same as they once were.

Thankfully Buck is still here and still strong.
