Could this be an old custom shop knife?

While digging through my stuff, I ran across this one. It occured to me that I have no idea what the handle material is or anything about the knife. It has a mirror polished, 4 dot blade, no rivets.

Does anyone recognise the the wood? Could this have come out of the old custom shop?

I could be wrong (I've been wrong before and it's harder to tell on a computer screen than looking at it in reality) but it looks to me like a cherry wood with a cherry stain finish. I don't know any history of it though. Maybe Larry could give a better educated guess.

Very interesting Plum,

It has a 4 dot blade on a frame that cant be newer than a 2 dot IMHO based on the lack of radius and the size of the pivot rivot. I think it is a reblade from the fabled time of when you could request more liberally. Those scales are cool looking I cant believe it is a reblade of a 3rd version 4th var that came without inlay rivots. Those dont look typical to the ebony used but who knows? Love it:thumbup:

I just found this picture that I took of it a long time ago I guess. The picture title says "cocobolo 110". I don't know if that's what it is or just what I thought it was.

Hmmm. When did they start the radiusing? Here's a picture (top to bottom) of a 2 dot, 3 dot and this one. I'm sure I have a regular 4 dot somewhere to compare, just couldn't locate it right now. All these frams seem to be identical with no radius.

Could be a 3 dot and figgered that when I posted. As I was in post mode I had it in my mind the pivot was larger than it is and was too lazy to go back and look. The 4 dot is radiused so I still think 2 dot but maybe a 3-the head bolster just looks 2 dot to me. Could very well be cocabola.

The blade is identical to the one in my 4 dot 111 Classic. I wonder if maybe they used a left over.

Could be Dave, I of course dont know personally, but have heard tell here on the forum, in the older days you could request and recieve some very different stuff.

Looking again, I think Fritz may be right, maybe it is cocobolo:

What do you think plum?

I think the orange/red color is cocabolaish(new word-call webster:p) but only after Plum 1st mentioned it..as much as I'd like to take credit(of course only if its right, if not I blame Dave:eek::D)

I must have had some reason for calling it that when I took the first picture. That's probably what the seller said it was. I got it back when I didn't know cocobolo from knotty pine.:D

I don't know, it could be either of the two in wolfie's post, but I lean towards the coco.

Remember that the first four dot blades have non radiused frames. Then they went to the hand radiused frames, then the machiene rsdiused frames. It looks like in the picture that it has two rivots in the rear bolster. That would eliminate the earlier frames that did not have handle rivots. Cool looking knife, what ever it is. HL

:o I'll add that to the list of things I didnt know-thanks Harold

You're right about the bolster rivets. Pardon my amateur job of pointing them out.:o

I think it's just been reslabbed and they polished the original blade.

Could have been done inside or outside of Buck.

I suspect outside of Buck because .... what the heck is that wood and would Buck have had it for an option?

Go back and reread your 110 data sheets . All the way back to 1968, 2 liner
110's had two visible butt rivets on 'both' sides ... However, I think we cannot eliminate it from being a early 4 dot frame upgraded in the Custom shop . Plus, those slabs look like cocobola and this knife is just like something they did in the early months of the custom shop . My two cents . DM

Good info DM.

All I know from this is that all that I've learned in the past 2 years and think I know just makes me realize how much I dont know. Very humbling. You guys keep teaching, I'll keep listening.:)
