I bought this used spyderco police without knowing much about the police model. the very tip of the blade that has a plain edge seems to have been sharpened, and maybe re profiled. should it be a chisel ground?

these are the sellers pictures, and he gave me permission to use them.

the pocket clips is fastened with what seems to be philips screws. not torx or anything fancy. like this http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3f/Screw_Head_-_Phillips.svg

the word "police" and the spyderco logo does not go deep down in the blade, it's just on the very top. the writing "spyderco VG-10" does go deppes into the blade. "seki-city japan" also goes into the blade. I'm in a lack of words to describe it. the spyderco logo in the pocket clip goes deep into the clip.

when I say that it goes deep, I trie to describe that I can feel it when I drag my finger over it.

so could you help me identify when this was made, or are the all the same?

Fairly new, since it's VG-10 and has the bug logo on the blade. VG-10's been used since around '03, but the bug didn't get added till '06 or '07 at the earliest. Not sure if/when they switched to Torx screws for the clip. As with other serrated and combo edge blades, the PE section has normal grind, only the SE portion is chisel.

What you are feeling is the difference between the stamped letters on the tang (VG-10, SEKI CITY etc.) and the laser etched POLICE and bug logo. the logo on the clip is stamped, same as the tang stamp on the blade.

As The Deacon said it is a newer model, and even more so because of the VG-10 with the bug and Police on the blade. The Phillips screws are normal and I don't believe they've switched the Police over to torx. Sometime in 09 they switched the Military over to torx from the traditional phillips. As for the plain edge portion of the blade it should be chisel ground just like the rest of the blade.
