I could get onto Knifeforums, but I couldn't get onto Bladeforums at the library. I looked at the filter preferences, and it specifically stated that I could not view weapons sites. Why could I view KF and not BF? Mods, if I am not supposed to mention the slower KF, please edit this post.

My wife has a master's in lib science and works in the school system and this sort of thing drives her absolutely bananas. As far as she is concerned, the library is here to provide access to information, not to filter the information. I'm lucky that our library allows me to look at any knife site (at least I haven't found any that are filtered), although place like Panera with wi-fi access are now filtering everything. As if you're going to sit at Panera for a lunch of soup and salad and maybe some harcore bondage.

At the Harford County library, can't view Blade Forums. At the Baltimore County library about five miles away over the county line, I can. At the Pennyslvania York County public library, over the Mason Dixon line, I can look at Bladeforums. At the Lancaster County public library, I can't. Doesn't make any sense at all to me.

Filters basically don't work. If you poke around you'll find you can get access to all kinds of weapons sites and pornography and everything else, and you'll find you're blocked from all kinds of legitimate things you should be able to access at the library, information on breast cancer for instance.

Go to the directors of the library or the mayor or whoever's responsible and raise heck! The whole concept is bad and it should be abandoned.

Just ask them if they're planning to build a bonfire of gun/knife-related BOOKS while they're at it.

Yes, exactly, go to the manager or head librarian or whatever it is you have there and insist that every book in the library that mentions guns, knives, or any other weapon should be removed from the shelves immediately.

That's a good idea. See, the reason they have this software is some fast-talking salesman convinced them they had to buy it to protect the children from all that horrible stuff on the internet -- and you can bet he never said a word about blocking a forum for knife collectors. Nobody at the library even knows Bladeforums is blocked, not until you tell them.

I don't think telling them would do anything, but it couldn't hurt. As for all of the books on guns and knives, I should hurry down there and get them before they get nice and crispy. Even though they are a small library, I don't think they have any books on guns and knives. As a matter of fact, I seriously don't think any libraries in MD have any books on guns or knives, at least not the libraries I've been to. Y'know what, I guess it is just all about location, I was at a public library high up in the mountains of PA, near Chambersburg, and stopped in a library to get some directions off of Mapquest. Well, I decided to log on here, and got on fine. I don't know, gentlemen, I just don't know.

Look in the catalog. I've never seen a public library that doesn't have at least a few books on guns.

One complaint does make a difference -- they add up. When they get enough complaints about the filter software they'll get rid of it -- other libraries have.
