Are Council axes any good? I saw a couple on a website I'm not allowed to mention since they are not a supporting member here, that looked and sounded good to my inexperienced self.

One of the very few 'made in USA' axes still in production. Council has a YOUtube video of how they're made. There are two distinct grades, one of regular steel whereas the premium line are of an alloy steel. They don't make junk!

Thanks. My uses will be general camping/bushcraft. Still trying to decide if I want a Condor double bit (per Nessmuk style) or a single bit (per Kephart style). Then I messed up and found that Helko Vario 2000 online ... interchangeable heads and handles could come in handy, depending on the job at hand ... (((sigh))) decisions, decisions.

Either the council boys axe or the long handled Hudson bay would work. Cheap but good. You might have to rewedge from the aluminum wedge to a wood one, especially on the HB, and fine tune the edge depending on where you get it, but you're still ahead. My son got the HB for Xmas and it has limbed several cedars and locusts so far, he's used it this week to clean up storm damage. It was sharpened by a vendor (free) and still shaves hair off my arm!

Different heads and handles sounds like a hassle. I use a boys axe one handed often when limbing and the HB works even better for the little guy, plus you've got more handle when you need it.
