I just got this yesterday any idea about the age ? I know I paid a little too much for it but it replaces one I had a long time ago and it going to be a user. Why would someone drill a hole in the end of the handle ? It's shallow and won't affect it at all.

It does only thing I have to do is a little sharpening I am happy with it.

I knew an old-timer who would condition his axe handles by drilling a 1/4" hole about 1/2" deep in the end of the handle, then stand it up and fill the hole with linseed oil (and repeat once the oil soaks in). It was supposed to let the oil soak into more of the wood than just rubbing it on the outside, I have no idea if it really worked well or not.

That makes sense

Any chance there was a screw eye or hook in that hole at one time? Would have been handy for hanging on a nail or hook in the garage.

No doesn't look like there was ever anything in there. My first thought was someone drilled a hole to check and see that the haft wasn't rotted ?

Hi, no idea about the age of the axe but wood doesnt get dark like that overnight! looks to get in great shape too! sweet stuff ;)
