Not sure if y'all have noticed this, but finding out retail locations for Council Tool products is damn near impossible. The website is absolutely useless in that regard, so I called them on the phone to inquire. "Sir we don't distribute our products, we only make them, House Hasson Hardware distributes them for us, so you'll have to contact them." Ok, so on to google for House Hasson Hardware's website. Hmmm.....ok, where's the "dealer locator" link?.......:concern:..... Hmmmm....ok......where's the "contact us" link?..... Second phone call, this time to House Hasson- "Well sir, we don't make our list of retailers public, and I can't tell you over the phone or email, making that info public would be giving information to our competition, and I'm not familiar with that brand, they told you we distribute their products? [SERIOUSLY, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT SHE SAID] Let me give you the phone number of our rep in your area, maybe he can help you locate a dealer".... Ok, so now, onto my third phone call, now to House Hasson's rep.....I leave a voicemail, and to his credit, he calls me back within the hour....."What was the name of the company again sir?....Council Tool....Like a tool council or something?...Oh it's a family name.....hmmm.....A lot of our customers around here sell Ames Tools. Would an Ames axe work for you? Ames is big around here. I've never heard of Council.....

HEY, COUNCIL TOOL- IF I CAN'T LOCATE A PLACE TO PURCHASE YOUR PRODUCTS AFTER GOING TO 2 SEPERATE WEBSITES AND MAKING 3 PHONE CALLS TO YOUR COMPANY OR A REPRESENTATIVE OF YOUR COMPANY, SOMETHING'S NOT RIGHT.

Anyway, does anybody know if there's a Council Toll retailer in the DFW area? Thanks.

And yes, I am fully aware that I can buy their stuff on Amazon, and eBay. I want to touch it and see it first.

If you really want a Council Tool you will have to order it online.......Most retailers only sell china products.

I've got a place up the road that has them in stock but I'm a few hundred miles from you.

If it makes you feel any better, they all seem to come in about the same "user" condition (slightly dull, needing a little sanding and oiling, possibly a fleck of rust on unpainted heads, etc), and all that I have seen appear to be hung straight, securely, and well-seated. I haven't noticed any major inconsistencies (one head falling off while others are okay, etc). The haft may not have perfect grain or anything, but I also haven't noticed any bad hafts (and they all appear much, much better than your typical hardware store replacement handles).

I think you would be safe ordering online, and if you really didn't like what came, many places offer free returns. Just something to think about. Overall I'd think you would be safe; I've never run across an axeample (I'll show myself out) in the store that I would stay away from...they all seem like good buys (and I look at them every time I'm there haha!).

Breed & Co in Austin sells Council Tool stuff. If you ever come this way they have 2 locations. They stock a pretty good selection most of the time. Also have Snow & Neely axes.

For posterity's sake, I'm going to go on record and say that Breed & Co definitely does NOT carry Council Tool axes or any other Council products. Took a trip to the Texas hill country this week and called before I stopped by on the way back to DFW. Hardware guys at both locations had never heard of Council Tool, but I believe told me they stock Estwing, Snow & Nealy, and Collins. The quest continues....:(

Go to ZORO TOOLS. They stock Council Tool axes & shipping is $5.00. I've ordered two axes and am satisfied.

ALSO, CONTACT Omaha Knife. They have in stock a special run, from Council Tool, of U.S. Forestry Service axes. These axes are boys axes, 58 Rc hardened blades, special edition superior handles. Omaha Knife also has other Council Tool axes.

Contact Bailey's in California. I ordered a 5 lb axe and sold it.

Council Tool is the primary supplier of axes for the U.S. Government. A major portion of their business is manufacturing for other companies, putting other names on those tools and keeping their mouths shut about it all.

Never had any problems with ordering Council Tool online. Their quality is very consistent. Of all the axe handles out there on axes, Council probably has the very best in appearance,
comfort, and well hung axes.
