I was hoping someone could tell me if it would be good for splitting and cutting. Im aware its short, being a pack axe. Its a beautiful piece though. Im mainly wondering if it could be rehung on a longer handle. 24 in. is a wee bit short..

Yes, you can rehang it on a longer handle. Council sells their non-velvicut HB on a 28 inch handle and Best Made sells a rebranded velvicut on a 26 inch handle. You might even be able to order a longer handle for yours from either company.

Now, I am a huge fan of the HB pattern but I am under no delusions that it is a splitting tool for dealing with, say, making cordwood for your stove.. Beyond splitting branch sized pieces for a campfire it's a little on the light side for effective splitting. Mine sees a lot of use in my yard for pruning, limbing, peeling bark and general crafting (making pegs, notching logs, anytime I need a log to be a different shape than it's current one.)

As for cutting, well.... (3rd repost of this pic but what the hell)

Green western red cedar, one swing.
