Countdown to the Spyderfly...

Given the acknowledged solidity of the compression lock, I would post that the solidity advantage mentioned above for the butterfly design is largely illusory, especially when you consider that carrying them is illegal in many to most jurisdictions. I understand that there is a legitimate market for these knives, but I also wonder just how many of us are turned on to them because we have seen them used in however many "cool" movies and tv shows.

Before you say it, I will readily admit that a movie, The Iron Mistress, and a tv show, The Jim Bowie Show, were what turned me on to Bowie Knives when I was but a tyke and that love has continued into my "grouchy old man" stage :D , and that is why I said that there is a "legitimate market for these knives." I only want to recognize that most want them for collector items, as I do with my Bowie Knives, rather than as EDCs or as MBCs. And I would further remind those who do wish to carry them that they should check the Knife Laws forum for legality in their local jurisdiction before venturing out with one on their persons.

Sorry to be a wet blanket.

:(
I doubt I'll ever carry mine. It will be played with, oiled, flipped, and stored in my "knife box" with my other Spyderco's that don't make the EDC rotation. :) But I'm still going to get one. :)

Possibly, but there aren't that many instances of said use. In fact it's so rare to see a balisong on the big or small screen, that the Forum folks report them whenever they see one, and usually the screen time is VERY brief. The best scene perhaps, is from Big Trouble in Little China, and is performed by stuntman Jeff Imada as a knife and stick routine. It lasts about twenty seconds as I recall. My interest came from watching my co-moderator Chuck Gollnick, manipulate a balisong in Eugene a few years back, during the first Golden Age of balisongs. I've no doubt the compression lock is a good one, but balisongs are strong too, AND they can be manipulated. You know you want one. :)

I usually alsways carry one as an EDC, along with a afck or some spydie. Though I will sometimes only carry a bali.

Due to the laws of my state, I doubt I'll ever carry one, either. But it would be neat to have one around the house where it wouldn't cause a problem ... other than to my knuckles.:p ;)

anyone know if i'm gonna have a problem getting one of these in California? i'm fairly clear on length restrictions, and such, but i'm fuzzy when it comes to ownership/purchasing a balisong. btw, i've no intention of carrying it outside my house... thanks for any light anyone can shed...

abe m.

It may have been because of the notriety that TV and the movies have given to the butterfly knife that it is banned in most places. The only reason I can see for its continual banning is because of this notriety and ability to intimidate through skillful manipulations.

Mmm. I don't keer what folks think--I'm gonna carry mine! ;)

They're viable blades and I've been hankering for a nice bali for EDC.

So will we see it at midnight tonight? Or do we have to wait until some later time tomorrow?

I'm guessing later tomorrow. But you can bet I'll be here at midnight waiting :D :p

btw, I love that sig Donuts

Yeah, it's not like carlos is going to be waiting 11:58, 11:59, Ok, I can Post it. Just wait, dummies. Ok, I'll Check at 12:05.--Joe

WSJ reports that investors in the know are buying up the stocks of companies that manufacture "Band Aids" in anticipation of the release of the SpyderFly. ;) :D

Why the heck not?
Don't music sellers often have "midnight madness" so you can buy the CD that night. Why not entertain the hardcore fans of Spyderco by having a special midnight sale, preferably with a special "thank you, hard core fans" discount.
It would a first, and would definetly draw attention.
Of course, I realize it is a bit late to do this now, but why not in the future? Good things have to start somewhere, and everyone knows that Sal is very good at starting new things, right?
