counterbore for titanium

I have a 5/16" counterbore with changeable pilot that Ive been using to cut the recess in the blade for the bearings. It works perfectly. Well I tried to counterbore the titanium for the pivot screw and it just won't cut it. Do I need a carbide one or what?

Thanks, Brad

I'm don't know what kind of machines that you have, but I'd used to rough out a bore or recess with a carbide end mill and follow up with a very small insert boring bar.

I use center cutting carbide end mills.

Are you using a mill or drill press?

May want to stick to HSS cutters then. To use carbide it is best to have a rigid setup. HSS works fine on titanium as long as it is very sharp and you must not overheat the ti or the tool. Use slow speeds and firm feed in short durations.

+1 I use a HSS CB 1/4 pilot 3/8 cut slow rpm's like 150-200 use good pressure and break the chips don't try to go full depth in one cut.

It's good to hear the HSS should work fine. I bet mine is just dull. Pretty easy to sharpen huh? Guess I'll try that. Whats the best way to go about trying to sharpen one of these?

Dude you are not far from me, come up and I will show you. Mail it to me and I will do it. Or call me and I will explain it.

Chuck Bybee suggested I use a cobalt endmill for counter boring the lip for the race. I was skeptical that I could do this with just my floor press however after setting everything up and squaring the table and work piece to a chucked bit , in this case a .1870 reamer, that matched the pivot hole exactly I was then able to replace the reamer for the 5/16th cobalt endmill. It work very well.

I have a cobalt 5/16ths counter bore but I dont have a .1870 pilot, just the 3/16ths pilot. Only one side of my frame is bored under so the pivot from Alpha will snap in so when using the counter bore on the otherside I used the slowest speed on the press and just pecked at it till I reached depth.
