counterfeit detecting

I know that it happens. I have even seen an example of a CS tanto that was very clearly a counterfeit but only because I knew what the real one looks like. I know to look for obvious signs of cheaper steel, flawed craftsmanship and so on. I also am researching (hence in part, my post here). I am buying a Strider SnG used and local. I also know that Striders sometimes don't have perfect QC. Any other advice or red flags to look out for when buying a second hand knife? It is a personal sale from a guy on CL so researching him is not an option. Thanks.

Newcoyote,

I am expecting a cs recon in the mail on a trade I just made. Can you provide some signs to look for since I've never held one in hand.

Thanks

Ask the guy if he has the original sales slip from when he bought the knife. If he says he doesnt have it, ask who he bought it from.

Just take a few pics of the knife when it arrives and post them here. The folks here on BF will almost certainly be able to tell you if it's a fake.

Actually cutlerylover made a video featuring the magnum tanto, not the Recon. That is how I knew the one at an antique store was fake. If I had not seen the video it might not have occurred to me. The one thing I can offer is if the one you are getting is supposed to be in San Mai Steel. The real one should have a faint line about 1/4" above the edge bevel where the two different steels meet. I happen to have that knife and it is easy to see. The Recon does come in other steels though. That is about all the amateur insight I can offer. I think you should be OK though. The Magnum is about double the price.

Watch a YouTube video of the knife in question?

Find some knife reviews on the forums?

Seems like the best way:thumbup:.

Thanks everyone, I'm not too concerned since I am getting my recon from a reputable BF guy. I just thought I would ask since I have never held one in person and I know that the gentleman I am getting it from got it in trade also.

Thanks for the good tips.

Hey guys I have a quick question regarding a benchmade I bought off ebay. I own a spyderco with a black blade and that knife has a completely bk coated blade and so I figured my benchmade would be the same. However this 710 with a bk coating is not completely coated since in the area of the bushings were it folds, you can see the metal. Is this normal or should I be asking for my money back?

Umm...unless you want to give us your Gmail ID and password, we're not going to be able to see those pics. ;)

Yep, the pics worked fine. Could you take a picture of the knife from the side, too? That's the easiest view for figuring out if it's a fake. Assuming it's not, the question would then become whether it's actually new. All of the Benchmades I have are uncoated, but I'm sure there are others who could tell you if the worn/uncoated area that you're seeing is normal for a new BK1-coated Benchmade.

Thanks -- definitely looks genuine to me. Everything from the G-10 to the jimping to the Benchmade logo to the designer/patent/steel markings on the opposite side of the blade is exactly as it should be. Now we just need someone with a BK-1 coated Benchmade to chime in about whether the coating wear on the blade tang indicates that the knife is used rather than new as the seller claimed.
