A recent CRK thread got me thinking..... wait,...... I think I have an idear!

The counterfeit knife situation is an ever growing problem in the cutlery industry. There are plenty of aware knife guys on here who notice this stuff and do what they can to try and stop it. Maybe there should be a different sub forum created that could be dedicated to this. It would be a place where more people could get involved in flagging and making other consumers aware. This problem is not CRK specific so it would be across all knife brands; I know balisongs and autos have their fair share of counterfeiting problems too and I'm sure there are other areas that I'm not aware of. If eBay got six hundred red flags on a counterfeit item instead of six that might make them begin to remove more of the garbage.

As well as rallying resources across brands, I think that having all of this sort of info in the same place would be an invaluable learning tool for noobs. If someone types in "counterfeit knives" into Google, the information is fragmented and hit or miss. However if a bunch of threads from this sub-forum popped up on top of a "counterfeit knife" search it would lead back to the other threads and all the info in one place. We could call it C.C.T.F. (Counter-Counterfeiting Task Force) Haha

I just think that counterfeit knives annoy enough of us and financially effect enough makers that there are people on here willing to spend some time fighting it. If that effort was more organized it might have a bigger impact.

If people think this is a good idea then I think this thread should eventually be moved to General Discussion. If it's not... then I just wasted ten minutes!

I would join that and help flag fakes! I can't stand to see all of them popping up for sale, and nothing is being done about it. I would think that most of us that are dedicated buyers of the real knives would want to protect the brands we use and support their efforts!! My brother recently told me about a coworker that was showing him his new "Emerson". It was a bad copy and the guy was complaining about how he was disappointed after hearing so many great things about them.

I am a noob myself! And I would appreciate that kind of resource. I think that it is a splendid idea. I hate those fake's so bad! You're definitely on to something here

I hate fakes. I hate that people make and sell fakes. I hate that consumers get ripped off by fakes. I hate that the manufacturers we support loose business to fakes. I hate that we all spend a little more on each knife because manufacturers spend money to fight those making fakes. I hate the thought of someone really needing their knife only to find out it failed because it is a fake.

(Stepping down from soapbox)....Count me in....ready to support C.C.F.T

I say it's not a bad idea but there are a few buts......those aside for now you don't really need a whole new sub forum to do this and there is another, easier way. As a (payed ?) member of BFC you can start your own groups. It would be fairly straight forward to collect and present any info. one may find on fake knives in one of those groups. Any members here so inclined to join the group can contribute and post as one can with any thread. Some one will need to put the work in to keep on top of and to some extent filter the information if it's to function as desired though.

I would probably speak to a super Mod. before starting the group, just to make sure there isn't any unintended making of waves or rocking of boats.... ;)

Good idea, thanks for the input. I'm probably not the best person to execute something like we've been discussing; just throwing around ideas. If anyone reading this has the motivation and time they are welcome to look further into it.

If there are enough people involved it would probably be workable with out too much bother to one as an individual. I'm just thinking about how to deal with the info. over time. People come and go and interests wax and wane. I do think it's a perfectly worth while endeavour and I know this whole nonsense pisses a lot of people off.

I love this idea, but it will have to handled correctly to avoid the ban on direct links and references. Mod's are touchy about that. As far as educating the consumer goes, experience and communication are key and two of the great values of this sub-forum. I swear if I pull up 25 items on a search for "Sebenza" at that aucton site, 12 are going to be counterfeits or mod's. Being able to spot them is a continuing educational experience.
