Counterfeit multi-tool knife? (Mammut)

I noticed a 17 function multi-tool knife is being sold on Ebay for $8.00. It is very similar to the Leatherman Wave with a diamond coated file. The Wave sells for close to $90 at Walmart, so how does one sell a similar knife for a tenth of the price?

A friend told me the knife is a fake since it ships out of Hong Kong. Does anyone know anything about Mammut knives? What kind of quality are they? What steel is the blade made of and can anyone really make a profit selling them for that price? Thanks for any input.

It's a knockoff. Don't buy it, because everytime you do, they get more money to make even more crap. This thing will prolly break the first month you have it.

It looks like an LM-Wave, Egad! These guys are really peddling their inferior stuff on people who may have no idea that this multi-tool is probably gonna cause more harm than good. They started with electronic stuff, now they're copying my beloved LM's!!!

I agree wholeheartedly with Zwaplat, DON'T BUY IT!!! Each time somebody does, it only emboldens them to make more.

You get what you pay for. My son bought a $9.99 "Leatherman" at a gas station....broke it opening a can of pop.
Do not buy

god, that just makes me sick....I pitty all those guys who want a leatherman but settle for the cheaper copy's, that is what helps fuel these darn imports.

What I was wondering was if it was really a "Mammut." I believe they are made in Germany but know really nothing about them. Even if they are Mammuts, they would also have to be counterfeit for that price I would think.

I have got a mammut, got it for free. I don't now what steel it is (there is stamped 2Cr). The lock mechanism is i guess the same as the original supertool. I've rearranged some of the implements, because the lock was not propperly alignded wich resulted in a non functional lock.

There is a lot play on the plier jaws. All in all, there is realy a lack of quality.

Friends of mine got a similar tool from an outdoor shop. Mammut is a well respected outdoor gear manufacture and I presumed that the tool was a cheap Chinese promotional thing.

You buy something like that, you are going to end up wanting the real thing anyways. So don't waste your money and just go for the real thing.

Shameless or not, they are lame... Chinese multitools won't stand any substantial job. I've got couple of Chinese made fixed blades (Mammoth or Viking) - good for the price, but not folders and - God forbid - multitools.

I bought a Leatherman Core at Walmart for $57 and after one week the locking mechanism broke. The only "rough" treatment it got was I dropped it at work on a cement floor while it was closed and there seem to be no damage but not long after that I noticed one of the tabs on the locking button was broken.

This may have been simply a defect but I got my money back and intended to save up for the Leatherman Charge when I saw the Mammut on Ebay for $8.00. It is very similar to the Wave as far as features except the locking feature is probably the same as the original Leatherman.

I bought it because it seemed incredible that somone could sell something for that price unless it was made out of tin. Surprisingly, it appears to be a good quality multi-tool. The pliars felt very much like the Leatherman Core and the other implements work well. I don't know what type steel it is other than stainless but it probably is very much like the Leathermans except for the Charge.

I thought Mammuts were made in Germany but it is hard to find much information on them. I may still continue to save and get the Charge but from what I see it is not much different than the Core I bought.

The Mammut knife didn't hold up as well as I thought. One of the blades didn't hold and would flip backwards when opened and a lot of pressure was put on it. Leatherman is definitely a better quality knife than the off brands! Just bought a new Charge and even the feel is better than the knock off. Regards.
