I didn't know there were official Camo and yellow scaled RAT 1s....if it smells like a fish it might be a fish.

this camo scaled one doesn't say "Model 3" on the tang but I still suspect it's another fake one.

Made me smile. Unless they moved from Alabama to NY?! :) For Fun, google that 26 Empire Street Franklineville NY They have parking for 4 cars, and a house across the street with a funky above ground pool. I guess the pool is part of the Aquatics Adventure Training (AAT) Course.

Nice find. That website has some really funny knock offs. Sad really, but entertaining.

Ontario Knife Company has always been in NY - it is in Franklinville...and the PO Box is correct. I didn't look up the street address - I found the Made in Taiwan type more interesting

Though it's true that Ontario is a NY State based firm, and though I do not know if Ontario has a line of knives made overseas, it may be true that they may. Kbar has a some knives made overseas, so maybe Ontario does too? Don't know. Even if they do have an overseas line of knives made, no guarantee that what one finds online are the real deal as far as Ontario or any products go, without really knowing the source. I do wonder if Ontario does have such a line of overseas knives, and am sure one of the Reps will give us the facts :)

It's not a secret that the Rat folder line is made in Taiwan. Pretty sure the Utilitac series is as well but don't quote me.

If they are fakes, they look pretty darn close. Except for the Model 3 part.

I agree, something just doesn't look right. Usually if they are priced below normal that can be a good indicator.

I looked on Ontario's site and did not see the camo, but sites are not always current either. I was cruising the Flea and noticed so Bear Killers that were phoney looking as well.

Hi guys,

A couple of points came up here, so we'll do our best to clarify everything.

That sure looks fake to me. There are RAT 1s out there with different scales, but a real RAT model 1 should say, you know... Model 1. The fakes that are out there can get pretty good, so even if it looked real to us, that's no guarantee. We can usually confirm if we can get our hands on it, but most of the time that's just not worthwhile.

We sure are in Franklinville, NY, and we have been for over 100 years. We've been in New York for our entire 125 years as well.

Yes, the RAT 1 and Utilitac are made in Taiwan. We make about 85% of our products in the US, and would love to do all of them ourselves. That said, it's hard to complain, since the result is a good knife we can get to you guys for a low price.

fwiw.. i am digg'n the look of that digicam 'model 3' (lol) with the stonewashed clip. Do legitimates with G-10, OntarioKnifeCompany, and I will buy a few.

There's a whole thread of those ideas. Our dev guys are booked up for at least the rest of this year, but a variant RAT 1 is very possible in the near future.

Im planning on getting one of the fake camo Rat 1s from this site just for the scales. I wanna swap my real Rat 1s plain black scales for the camo, I think itd look sick. Its cheaper than buying a sheet of g10 or moonglow, plus i wouldnt have to shape them its a direct replacement. What do yall think? I also may switch the pocket clip cuz my rat 1 is the new rebranded ontario model without the randals logo...anyone else done this?

My only major thought on that would be this: be careful. If they're selling known counterfeit knives, there's nothing saying their payment handling is above board either. Plus, if that's not a flawless replica, you could see a pretty lousy fit on the scales.

i mostly collect spyderco's,but i took a chance on this camo version on e-bay only because it said model 1 on the blade, now i only came to this thread by chance to find out its a fake rat! i should just stay away from e-bay because of all this fake crap being sold there! can't help but think' i fell for it,boy do i feel dumb !

I'd be interested to know how the fakes compare in size, fitment, etc. Buying one and then finding out is aggravating, but now you can use it as a learning experience. Get a real one, compare and take side by side pictures. This way we might learn better ways to identify the fakes, as well as wether or not scales will fit.
Also the bay isn't all bad, I have gotten some VERY good deals on there for discontinued items that can't be found elsewhere. Just do some checking, read ratings, and see where they're located. If they don't provide good enough pictures, ask for more.

yes, i to have gotten some real good stuff on the bay,as this would be my 1st time to get fooled! but i will do like you said and compare with a real rat 1 and take some pic's of the both of them, and will put it up as a learning exp. the thing about it is the seller is telling me its not a fake or knock off !will see and compare, any way this is hear for all to see and take note..thanks guys.

I really think you should just get a service provider on here to make you some. I highly doubt it would be that expensive, being that it's g-10 in a fairly common pattern.

Well, I've heard that China does not consider itself subject to US patent and copyright laws. And, US companies are contracting with Chinese government controlled factories. So, if you think about it, the US company basically surrenders the design to the Chinese government to do with what they will. And, from this thread and several over on the Spyderco forum, it is evident the Chinese will take a US company's designs and then reproduce it in cheaper materials and sell them through foreign sites.

And we sit in here and wonder how China is able to compete and damn near rule the world with its flourishing economy and break-neck production capabilities.

i think they should make a sticky on fake or clones on this ontario forum,as it would help some people from making the same mistake as i did !they have one on the spyderco forum, its mush needed info and would help us dumb people who just don't no what to look for in a new knife!
