Counterfeits and Fakes

This afternoon I was driving along and saw a new knife shop had opened up. Of course I was all excited to go in. I spoke to the guy behind the counter and he claimed it had been open about a week. They had some pretty poorly crafted knives and blatant knock-offs.

I see what appears to be a CQC7, which I've been looking at recently. So I asked to examine it and it's got satin finish and a combo-edge. I recall reading around here to look more closely to identify counterfeits so I did. To my surprise, where the Emerson logo usually is was the name Benchmade and under the name was the Benchmade balisong logo. I turned the knife over to the clip side and saw the Emerson logo on the back and the name Benchmade on the clip.

I just shook my head, handed the knife back, and walked out. The guy has the nerve to sell them for $125. Now I just hope that there wasn't some super limited edition Benchmade/Emerson run because then I will feel like an idiot.

Sorry for the wall of text. Moral of the story: be careful!

uhhh.....get ready to feel like an idiot.

the first cqc7 to hit the market was produced by benchmade, though not a special edition necessarily. ernie desinged it, benchmade built it, around 1997 or so.

in 1999 ernie started his own production, and produced the cqc7 under his own name.

that is the real thing, and quite a find for $125 depending on condition.

Now I feel like crawling under a rock. It had both names on it which is really what confused me. I'll keep you updated...or maybe I will just hide from shame.

not at all, just teasing a little with the first line in my post.

live and learn.

now go back and buy it!! some say they prefer the benchmade 7. it definitely has a different feel, and the profile is slightly different. the scales and blade on the bm are a touch wider, and the pivot tends not to back out, which is a concern for many eki users. i found the detent to also be stronger on the bm.

the serrations on the bm also go further up the blade, leaving less plain edge, than the eki.

ive owned several of both brands, and prefer the feel of the eki, but the detent of the bm. also, the bm is strictly tip down unless modded.

the early eki's were either tip up or tip down.

When you but that Emerson---please send it to me.

I don't plan on buying it. I'm in college so money's tight. I'm getting enough money together for a black, plain CQC7, w/wave.

This one is bead blasted, combo, without wave. I can try to find their number and give it to you if you want. It's about a 40min drive so I'm not sure when I'll be in the area again.

Thanks, Broh. I have one on the way. A Waved CQC-7B Satin PE. I will strip it though and send it to TK. Good luck with your Emerson--- you will love it.
