I saw a clearly counterfeit CRKT M16-14ZLEK knife at a national chain today. It was made by Famous Trails...a POS Taylor brand!
How prevalent are these? It was damn close in appearance except for the omission of the Auto LAWKS and the steel, soft as hell, it produced a burr just by stroking it against the aluminum display counter edge. I've seen Buck copies and case copies but never at a National Chain. I know Big 5 is not known for their quality products but this is pretty bad!

Yeah I have been contemplating starting a thread about counterfeit knives.
I recently was asked about an FKMD ( Fox knives Military Division) Khukuri.
I had shown a pic to a friend, who showed me a link on a well known, well reviewed sword selling website..( dunno if they are paid advertisers here, so I won't violate TOU by posting their name) with a $30 knockoff.

Here's the thing.. The pic WAS a real FKMD Khuk photo, with the fox logo "smudged" out.

It was listed as an " Extreme duty khukuri"...no brand.
Normally My scam light would have went off, but the site has a TON of good reviews for delivering the (sometimes cheesy) merchandise.

Im actually considering just writing off $30 and buying one just to see what comes.
Worse case scenario I can use it as a spatula.

Gerber's been making a knock-off of the M16 for years. It's called the Evo.

Knock offs and copies (no matter how blatent) are not counterfeits.

I think every pocketknife company on the planet has counterfeited the "Barlow" since it was first created in 1670. :D

Maybe the M16 will someday be as ubiquitous as the Barlow. ;)

Perhaps a sticky thread in general for fakes and knock offs would be good. There are so many now it's hard to know what to not buy. I can spot a fake Spyderco a mile off but that is because I collect Spyderco knives. I have noticed a trend on Ebay over the last couple of years of more and more fakes. I report them over and over but they often run the length of the auction. I have seen Spyderco, Chris Reeve, CRKT, Buck, etc, etc... It's sad and folks who are not knife people don't even know they are getting taken to the cleaners.

As long as their not selling it as a CRKT its not counterfeit.

edit: got beat to it

If ya make make a product, and you copy a competitor's product so close that you EXPECT the similarity to FOOL people into thinkiing they are buying a the competitor's product, you are counterfeiting.

Knock-off = Counterfeit.
No one owns the rights to "Knife"...so there can be various interpretations of a general idea or design..
But when you try to fool the buyer into thinking they are buying another's product...it's FRAUD.. THAT's counterfeiting.
example:
I can make Khukuri's all day long ( in theory.. mine would look like rejected pry bars)
But if I make one and stamp HI on it, and swear it's an Uncle Bill designed one of a kind from Hymalayan Imports for sale today..., THAT would be counterfeiting.

Then we have those folks that would use it s a buying guide too.

At Big 5?!

Wow, I'll avoid everything they've got - I do most of it already.

You should give CRKT a heads-up.
