What are you guys using to countersink handle slabs when using the small torx head screws?

Thanks Kraut

I'm using a 1/4 countersink at 82 degrees for 2-56 flat head torx screws. You can get them at MSC or lots of other places. Counterbores for small button head screws are a different story. I still haven't figured out quite how to approach that whole thing.

I believe you can get counterbores for screws down to and including 1x72 but they are made for cap head screws only. Measure the head size needed and go with a bit a few thousand larger. If you are desparate to square off the bottom of the hole ( it will allowe you to drop the screw even a little lower) take a drill of the same size and grind the cutting bevels off so that the end is almost flat. This can now be used to finish the bottom of the hole. It will work well on your metal bolsters also. Frank

For button head torxs (2-56) there is a flush bottom counter sink in the Travers Tool catalog that works perfect.....the hole is about .165" and the heads are a little smaller.... I use them on the titanium holes in my handles......HOWEVER.....the torx heads and slots are FORMED and the process puts them out of round......you need to know this because you will have to do something to even them out or you will twist off the head or the end of your driver trying to get them to go in........trust me on this one! :p

Thanks for the tips Frank and Tom. With the larger sizes do you find the same out of round problem? I'm thinking about the 8-32 pivot screws....Also, where to get a counterbore for that size?

Thank-you.

I havn't begun using torx screws yet as I never really consdered
them for fixed blades which is all I am into right now myself.
A friend showed me a personalized 605 folder at the fall wolverine show and I've had the bug to put one together for myself with a nice set of Ironwood scales ever since.

If anyone else has other methods I'd love to hear them.

Peter,
MSC carries the counterbores. Here is what I use for 82 degree flathead screws - #1 HSS Straight Shank Machine Screw Counterbore - 63762017 and for a #2 screw - 63762025.
For button head screws - 63761019 and for #2 - 63761027. I use the big Blue book but they are on the net at www.MSCDirect.com.

Thank you Kit! As a matter of fact I was just getting ready to order some taps from MSC so I really appreciate having someone point me to the proper counterbores as well. There's so much stuff in that book that for a person like myself who is just learning machining it can be a little overwhelming. :) I did try grinding flat a 5/16 drill bit today so I could sink the button head screw on my pivot. It worked pretty well once I had made a first pass with an unground bit.
