Country OF Origin Database? Possible Sticky Thread?

In a separate thread, I mentioned a quest for a US made folder. Several suggestions turned out to not be US made. And in my own research, it seems many manufacturers are not quite forthcoming about where their knives are manufactured.

Has anyone ever considered making a sticky thread database with such info? I like to know such info whan I'm purchasing a knife, and it may be difficult to divine, particularly when buying online.

Though this data set is something I wouldn't mind seeing, I'm just grabbing some popcorn and waiting for any fireworks.

I would note that US law requires that the country of origin be put on the manufactured item.

I don't think anyone needs more sticky threads.

If you can't figure out where a knife is made- and it is that important to you, buy something else.

It's important to me, and lots of folks, simply because we want to know. Same goes for type of steel, grind, etc.

I think it's particularly intriguing because many manufacturers don't like to advertise the fact that something may be made, for example, in Asia. And are perfectly willing to let you know... after you buy.

I would think that they are perfectly willing to let you know before you buy. All that should be necessary is for you to call them.

Shecky-I noticed you were looking for a large American made folder for around 35 bucks in the other thread. The sad truth is that unless you're buying a Case or certain models of Buck or Camillus there just aren't many folders in the $35 dollar range being made in America anymore.

Sal Glesser of Spyderco said a few weeks back that American knife companies have all but lost the low and medium end knife market to the cheap overseas labor. If this trend continues (and there is no reason to think it won't-check out the labor strike at Camillus) Case may end up being the only low to medium end company still producing knives in the USA... Just my rambling 2 cents worth.

I thought so. Which is one reason I limited the query to $35. I figured the list couldn't be long.

The reason for this thread was that several of the suggestions within those parameters mistakenly turned out not US made. It occurred to me that some (many) folks may be mistaken about where their knives may have been made.

I'm sure they all know. The place is stamped on the blade. They probably got ahead of themselves and just listed knives that were in the $35 range.

For what its worth and something to think about - I bought a pair of New Balance shoes the other day. There were tags sewn into the shoes which read Made in America. There was also a paper tag attatched to shoes explaining exactly what Made in America means. It explained that for various reasons some of the parts used to make the shoes were from overseas. If I recall correctly, it stated that a product could be identified as Made in America if 75% of parts and labor were of American orgin. I believe the Federal Trade Commission is the govt agency who writes the rules. Don't quote me on this, I did not pay a lot of attention to it at the time. Just something to think about for those of you who insist on Made in America products. Just because it says so, it may not be 100% made in America.
