Can you tell what country a knife is made by the type of steel used? When ordering over the Internet they don’t say where it is made. So I was thinking if a ceratin steel always came from a ceratin country then I could tell where it was made. Most of the time when I see AUS8 it comes from Japan. When I see ATS34 it is US.

No, it wont work. Steel is very often made in one country, and then shipped to another country to be made into a knife. ATS34 is generally made in Japan and shipped round the world, while 154CM is made in the US. N690 is made in Austria, but I'm yet to see an Austrian knife made from N690.

Recently a lot of knives made from the AUS series alloys, AUS-6 and AUS-8 particularly, are manufactured in Taiwan.

I think it depends on what steel you are looking at. I know that some of the exotic Japanese steels like VG-10, Cowry-X, ZDP-189, are never imported out of Japan. Therefore if you find a knife with these steels, you are almost certain that it was made in Japan.
