Here are a couple of similar but different camp knives. The large one is our version of an original we saw in a collection and liked. It has a 10.5 inch flat ground blade of CPM S30V with file work on the back and sambar stag handle. It is a custom order and will be headed out next week.

Charlie and I decided to take the last piece of BG-42 we had and each make our selves a knife out of it. We don't get to keep knives often and decided that since we both like BG-42 this would be a good reason to make our favorite knife. This is the one Charlie made for himself. It has a 6 inch flat ground blade and sambar stag handle with a tapered tang.

I Really, REALLY like the chopper. I especially like the swedge and the filework just behind it. The stag on both looks great. The one you made for yourself looks very functional and like it would make a great camp knife or backpacker. Plenty of belly for alot of work. I really like both those knives:thumbup:

I've never used a knife with BG42, but the components of that alloy look outta sight!

These knives remind me of the ole Marbles knives from way back. So elementally utilitarian. You guys sure make some great looking blades:thumbup:.

Harry and Charlie,

You guys always take it to the limit. Great looking blades.

I meant to ask you at the meeting, where are you getting your antler slabs?

Robert

They both look to be superbly made. I like the way the handle on the shorter one has a bit of a guard. The stag on both knives looks awesome.

I like them both also. They look great and the stag is nice as well.

I would LOVE to do some whacking with either one!:D

I haven't used any CPM S30V, but BG-42 is one of my favorites.

Thanks for the comments guys. Good stag is always a problem Robert. Stag is probably my favorite handle material and it is also the first thing I look for at a show. I will always buy good stag when I find it and nearly always buy it where I can select the stag in person. It is also important to be able to take an average piece of stag and use it to its best advantage. Some of the best stag out there will be passed over because it is not easy to picture it as a knife handle.

Fantastic guys! Stag- one of my favorite handle materials, and BG-42 one of my favorite (and under-rated!) steels :) Can't beat that :D

Glad to hear you guys made a plan for one to keep... I know it's tough to do.

Thanks for sharing :)

BTW- Where's the one that you're keeping Harry??? :)

Nick a keeper is a rare thing. I won't make one that I wouldn't like to keep, but planning one from the start that I am going to keep is a first for me. The blade (hidden tang, cause that's what I like) is finished, the guard and spacers are in place and waiting for the final fitting. I am having a hard time deciding the type of handle material I want to use. I have a piece of stag that feels great in the hand, has a curve that drops the butt just like I like and the color doesn't suck either. But I also have this piece of old walrus tusk that has turned yellow, has some surface cracks that give it that look and it is shaped just like the stag......Problem with keeping the ivory is dealing with Charlie. He'll likely paint my anvil pink or weld a hammer to my vice or something.

Both really nice Harry. Though I love amber stag, we see so much of it these days it's nice to see good natural stag.

Can't wait to see your piece for the CKCA banquet/meeting at BLADE.
