This hawk is made with a mild steel wrap with a nickel wrapped 1080 bit forge welded in the middle. These sure are a pleasure to drift compared to a solid construction hawk. All credit for this design of the haft goes to Ryan Johnson from RMJ forge. Its file branded ash with a couple of buffalo horn beads, horse hair, and some tacks. Fieblings light brown stain and Tru-oil finish. The other one on the last picture is one that I made last w/e at the Montgomery community college in Troy N.C. Man I love curly maple.

lookin good Mark, Is that a handle from Hawkins, and how many coats of tru oil did you rub on it? I do love hawks. Nice job.

Cool, that's something I've been playing with for a while, I have trouble getting the eye welded just right. Looks like you nailed them.

That's a great looking hawk Mark. I tried a variation on your wrap the other day. Instead of one mild steel piece folded at the rear, I folded in the rear with a mandrel in the middle so I could forge the spike out of the folded side.

Yours looks like a good cutter.

Thanks Guys

I love doing these hawks. I just got the fouth edition of
"Indian Tomahawks & Frontiersman Belt Axes", kinda pricey but some great history and authentic pieces. I got so motivated that I wnet out and whipped up a spring fuller the neck on the bowl of a smoker. I am very happy:D . Two heats and whammo. It sure beats the heck outta trying to use a fullering hammer and the side ot the anvil. I'll post some new hawks by monday if all goes according to plan.

Bill I got the hafts at the school in N.C.I wish I had gotten all of them now but didn't have enough mu'la.

Ray the bit was about 1/3 of the length of the blade before it was forged.I'll take a pic of the tops so you guys can see the weld. I'm wonderin if it wouldn't be better to make the bit the whole length of the blade so the eye would have more of a punched look. We'll see.

Thanks Peter, Come by and see me in your travels sometime. It sure would be nice to see you make it to Trackrock. And anyone else that would like to come.

Thanks I.G and heatride.

Anybody have any tips on how to keep from scaring the wood under the eye when you press the head on?

Mark

Mark, really nice looking hawks! And they look sharp, too. I think you got your forging down pat,for sure. The ones you pictured are really nice, especially the maple handled one, my favorite. You did the wood justice, too!
