I have been looking at knife making threads, books, sites, you name it I try to look into it, before I spend $$ on some basic tools. The stickies really help but I am a hands on kinda guy and love to see things and feel them w/my hands and I was curious, how do I find local knife makers? I live just east of Pittsburgh, Pa in Irwin but I am not sure how to look up makers of any skill, to learn from and ask a million and 2 questions of? Finally, what in the world is a "KITH"? Thanks to all and any contributors to these sites that make knife making something that a guy can do in his spare time as a hobby! DonO

Knife In The Hat,
As for finding local makers, you did good by filling out your profile, someone may volunteer.

I believe you can look up ABS Smiths through their(the abs site) website. Look for Guild info as well. Plus just start going through all these threads and look for people near you and hit them with a PM or email. Even a state over, it seems most on here a familiar with where others are. Good luck and I promise you are doing the best thing. After meeting a few myself, my Knife-making has dramatically improved.

Thank you! That has been driving me crazy! I'll have to look up the "Knife in the hat" reference. Has to be an interesting one!

I'll do some digging on ABS Smiths and guild info! Thanks guys! BTW-Stan, that Damascus is gorgeous on your sig line pic! It's guys like you that inspire me!

Get a copy of one of the Knives Annuals and look in the back. They have a pretty good listing of knifemakers in each state.

I'm not sure if he still does but R. W. Wilson used to offer schooling/instruction. He is in WV. Google him and see what you come up with.

There are plenty of makers in the PA area. There are groups, like the Central Maryland Blacksmith Guild, that offer classes. Give Deker a shout and he will tell you who is closest to you. You will probably get an invite to his shop ( Not too far from you - on the PA/MD border), but visiting him could set you back years :)

Thank you Richard! VERY generous of you! I'll have to take you up on that this spring! BTW-Those hybrid bluegill are the biggest slabs I have ever seen! That is just crazy how big those things are! Take care and talk w/you soon! Don

send me an email with your number and i'll give you a call.

thoes are not hybrids but regular bluegills that were stocked in the pond we built back around 2002. we caught some decent size gills from the lake behind my buddys house. we never fished the pond we put them in for several years so the fish could spawn and grow. there are some bluegills over 12" long in there now. the bass are still growing and the biggest i caught so far was about 5 pounds. my buddy ate that one.
