I have carried SAK's for years and I've always wondered about the blade steel. Does anyone know what Victorinox and Wenger use for their blade steel? Next question, Wenger used to make a line of standard sized SAK's with locking blades called the Packlocks. Do they still make them and where do you buy them?

I think there have been several threads on SAK steel, so just do a search and you will probably find a good answer.
I don't know what they use but I can get both my Vics and my Wengers extremely sharp.

As for the locking Wenger:
I saw one once but I did'nt buy it and have regreted the decision many times. I don't think they make them anymore but you can probably still find one online.

Good luck and welcome,
Allen.

Wengers Packlocks are still available, however most of them have serrated blades now. The serrations are nice, very much like Spyderco's but I wasn't too thrilled with them on my small utility knife.

I believe both Victorinox and Wenger use a 440 satinless variant. They can be sharpened easily with a Spyderco Tri-Angle and hold their edge fairly well.:D

Gadgetman,
Allen is right, do a search on SAK steel and you should find a thread I started a while back. Victorinox's steel is very similar to 425M. I never found out what steel Wenger uses.
