Couple Q's on the Trident folder

Hi all...a bit of a lurker here, but had a couple questions as I'd like to get a new SOG and you all seem to be the experts :D

I currently have a Flash II and previously had a Mini X-Ray Vision (but it was lost/stolen...long story :grumpy: ). I really prefer the width of the Mini X-Ray Vision to the Flash II, but it's hard to get a reading on the width of the Trident folders.

Would someone mind measuring their Trident, or do a side-by-side comparison to either the Flash II or the Mini X-Ray Vision?

Another question lies in the weight of the Tanto Trident (3.7 oz) vs the regular point (4.5 oz). I know it's less than an ounce, but considering it's a 20% increase and I really like the weight of the Mini X-Ray Vision (2.6 oz), anyone think it will be a hassle?

After reading all that, I'm sure you'll say "just go with the Mini X-Ray" but I'd like to try something a little different. Maybe in the end I'll just get both

Thanks!

Travis

I like the feel of the Trident folder. If I were you, I would go to a shop and hold a few knives. There is no sight like the tactile feel. I do like the weight, size, action, looks, and feel of the Trident folder. As far as a Tanto blade goes, in my opinion they are not as cool looking. Yet I want a Tanto as well. I think they work very well. I like and use knives each day. There are other good creators. Yet the feel of a SOG is very great. I await the 3.0 Tomcat. That will be a knife for life.

Hi Travis

"Would someone mind measuring their Trident, or do a side-by-side comparison to either the Flash II or the Mini X-Ray Vision?"

The Trident is the same thickness as the Flash II. The Flash has much more taper (as you can tell by looking) toward the butt end of the handle and is a little shorter than the Trident handle. Even though both have a low-ride clip, the smaller butt end of the Flash II (or the Mini Vision) shows up less when in the pocket. The "hilt" end of both folders is the same in width.

My Trident has much more "snap" to the assist than my Flash II. I've jokingly taken to calling the Trident "son of flash" because it uses essentially the same opening system, but with some changes, the unlocking button for example. I prefer the button on the Trident. It's easier on my thumb!

I've carried and used the Flash II. It's a great, hard-working one-hand-opener. Comfortable handle and a useful blade shape.

But if I were in a situation where I needed a very reliable opener for a personal defense situation, the Trident would be my choice. The power of the blade opening is such that it would open, even if caught up in a over-shirt or coat during the draw.

Can't speak for the Mini-Vision. I have a full sized one that is really smooth, but never handled the Mini.

As far as the Tanto goes, I'm not a tanto blade fan (I modified the blade shape on the Vision I have), I don't think the ounce or two difference in weight will make that much difference in a pocket carry.
Choose the shape you like. It's hard to go wrong here.

Thanks a ton for that excellent reply, oopsdamn...that's exactly the type of info I was looking for! Good comparisons of nearly every angle of the knife.

There don't seem to be a lot of stores around here in the Tampa area to fondle knives so I've had to rely on the intarweb for good info, but it's seldom quite as good as what you've given me :)

Speaking of the Mini X-Ray, I miss that knife and am seriously considering getting another one (possibly right after the Trident!) I don't really care for the tanto blade or the serrations, but it was such a thin, light, reliable knife that I loved it! The thumb stud on the blade kept getting caught on my pants and I reaaaaallly didn't want to keep it locked since that could seriously slow deployment, so I just unscrewed and removed it. The action was so smooth I could push back on the cam lock, flick my wrist away from my body, and the blade would easily fly open to the cam-locked position...it was great!

I have been wondering the same thing. Does the discrepancy lie in the shape of the blade? Less steel being used?

Another question. Where are the SOG Trident Folders made?

I have just gotten to the bottom of the weight riddle. It seems that the weight of the Trident folder was either measured on a prototype and it weighed 4.5 oz or a mistake and should read 3.5 oz. I just went and measured one and it was 3.5 oz. Also the weight of the Tanto version is 3.7 oz. So the confusion lies in the weight of the first one.

As for where they are made, they are assembled here in our headquarters using domestic and foreign parts.

Chris Hi I am the new owner of the SOG Topo Merian its currently being shipped to me by an Ebay seller got a killer deal on a brand new one ($40) whats the general concensus on this knife Good or Bad?? I personally disliked it when it first was promoted however since then I have grown to like its features and of course the SOG quality and input on this as far as sales are concerned?

I can give you my opinion, but keep in mind that I do work for SOG so I will be a little biased.

I personally think it is a great knife. I too, was a little unsure of the styling at first, but it has grown on me. I think that you will be happy with the knife. The knife has been selling well and has become one of our top selling folding knives.
