Well quick couple questions. Can I use a plasma cutter to cut my blanks out. Thinking there might be to much heat involved. Steel is Aldos 1084. Since I'm still using hand tools what is the best way to insure the edges are flat. My last knife shaped object's spine was lopsided would like to prevent this and correct it in the future.

Anybody?

Rephrase the plasma cutter question. If I use the plasma cutter to cut out my knives. Will the heat produced cause problems when heat treating, or problems with the metal later on down the road.

I use a plasma to cut all my blanks. So far I have cut 5160 (7), 1080 (1), 154cm (1) and cmp154 (1). As I have a 2X72 the plasma doesn't cause me any problem. If you have a plasma you already know the edges will never be square to the world and there almost certainly will be edge hardening. This may be an issue if you use files but if you have any type of grinder this should not be a problem. Good luck, Jess

You can use the plasma cutter just allow about a 1/16" to 1/8" for heat effected zone,Use an angle grinder or bench grinder to finish profileing. Not the best but it can be done.
On the second question,just practice.
