So I'm in the market for another knife and had some quick questions.
I am looking at the;
Rat RC-5
Becker BK7
Ontario RAK
SOG Seal pup elite

This is going to be a general all around camping knife nothing too hard use, at most some batoning / chopping.

1. Do all the BK7's come with the little necker or just some it's hard to tell.
2. Is the Ontario RAK any good I have heard some issues about quality from that company and its mostly just the mall ninja in me that wants this one.
3. Is the SOG any good for camping or is that mostly an EDC type.
4. I have been looking at the Busse line and right away thought WOW I want one, then I realized would I really need to spend that much to get a good knife or are those just a combo of quality and VERY good marketing / sales. I am not going to be on survivor GA any time soon so I would have to go through like 5-10 BK7's or Rats just to be at the same price range.

I am leaning towards the Rat RC-5 but I like the idea of the BK7 coming with the necker.

Just to nip these responses in the butt .......
yes I will end up getting them all this is just suggestions for the next one.

Yes I have considered the Rat with Izula in the sheath.( really like the idea )

yes I have looked at swamprat and scrapyard. ( none really stood out )

no I have never used / owned a Busse just held some at Blade.....solid

Thanks for your responses and look forward to hear what you guys have to say. I am pretty new to the forums and have had a blast reading some of the posts. Lots of great info / people here.

if you dont think youll be using it too hard, the rc6 would probably be more useful than the rc5 for your purposes. full flat grind would be better for batoning

I like the rc-6 also but I just found out that they are making micarta handles for the BK7 .......sold :-)

I hope it lives up to the hype / reviews. Any one know when they are supposed to be on the Ka-bar site. I saw the post that said by Blade time but I don't see them anywhere?

I have the SOG Seal pup Elite ,It`s not too thick for food prep but I have not used it too much outdoors yet this year, I think it would work just fine for bushcraft .The only problem I can see with it is for some people the handle may be a little slippery when wet with animal fat and the like and the blade is pretty thick and the grind isn`t very high. I like it and$ still plan on useing and keeping it. I do not know if I would buy it for full price I got mine in a trade.

Yeah I held the SOG at blade and it does feel like it would get slippery if greasy, can't remember what its made of? I don't want to pay full price for anything so I will add it to the list and keep an eye out.

The SOG is an AUS8 taiwan made knife that doesnt feel to me like it has a ful tang. Those would be my reasons not to go with them. AUS8 is a fine EDC steel, but I'd like something more substantial for the outdoors.

The BK7 is one of the best knife deals in the industry. I LOVE mine. It has great balance, USA made, and has good tough 1095 that holds an edge and is easy to sharpen in the field. Long enough for some batoning and gound clearing, while the little BK13 it comes with would make a great food prep and fine work knife (yes.. all BK7s and 9s come with one, although i dont know i'f I'd necesarily call it a "necker"). for around $70, it is probably the best value. It is easily worth double that. Check it... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=642371

Ontario (IMO) is not a favorite of mine for their business dealings with other companies, and The ones I have held are sub par as far as fit and finish goes. Also I know for a fact their heat treat is rather hit or miss which can cause the blade stel to be good or bad.

Rat Cutlery is a FANTASTIC company with a warranty that can not be beat. Excellent heat treat, excellent 1095 steel. Head over to the RC forum to read about what I'm talking about.
