First is a fraternal sword, order of the Knights of Pythias, org founded ca 1860. Second is a German style hunting dagger, prob a tourist quality wall hanger. Both nice examples of their types. Both prob 1950s vintage.

Thanks, that would be about right for the vintage! The build quality on the hunting dagger is pretty good...nice weight to it.

Is there a maker's name on the hirschfanger, or retailer etch on the base of the Knight's Pythias sword?

Cheers

I took a peek in the current bible for fraternal swords (Kaplan, Marino&Hamilton).

It appears to show an exacting match for this sword and will prove to be unsigned by the maker/retailer

A consideration for Pythias stuff is that they introduced a Uniform Rank system in 1872 and this sword does not seem to show any indication of that. It could well mean it is from the earlier years 1864-1872. The reverse of the guard will not have the K P on the cross, as the face does.

Cheers

It was unsigned, will have to check for the reverse of the guard.

Any idea of rough value?

To a dealer? Not so much.

I just sold a rare guitar for roughly half of possibility. It was my soul but not my heart. A leftover from the Keith Richards days. How to say goodbye to a constant in my life since 1971. In the end, moving it to a dealer that would bite.

The sword would be the same type of thing. Fairly uncommon, with a solid book reference, it could do better than the run of the mill fraternal sword but it's a niche market. Look to sold listings of fraternal swords for fancier examples. http://www.amazon.com/American-Fraternal-Sword-Illustrated-Reference/dp/1931464383 The right buyer might go "ooooh, ahhhh"

The hirshfanger, as mentioned by someone else. A timeless fashion but still in catalogs. Clean 19th century examples can reach mid three figure value or more but these later 20th century ones probably less than $200 street.

The casting work on that Hirschfanger's guard looks pretty detailed from what I can see in the photo; I don't think I'd dismiss it as a cheap "tourist" type piece. But from the blade style I'm guessing it's not very old. How thick is the blade?

Also, did you just polish all the metal fittings on that thing? Because even when I saw the butt cap in the first picture, it seemed to have the look of gold. And it really stands out brightly in the other photos- no tarnish at all, even down in the little detailed crevices. Is it gold plated? I can't tell in the photos, but has the plating worn through on exposed edges anywhere?

I think it's gold plated too, and there is no brassing on it that I can see. Think the blade is around 1/4" or so at the tang.
