Court Room Weapon Seizures

Did anyone see today's New York Times? There is an article in there about the number of weapons seized in court rooms. They have some pictures of stuff confiscated or simply left behind. The writer seemed surprised that people might actually carry items for self defense. It is interesting to note, however, that the court guards said that they realized taht everybody who carries something is not a criminal and that they do not treat as such.

My mom went in to a courthouse for jury duty, they seized her keys because she had one of those tiny swiss army knives on her keyring. I thought that was ridiculous.

I've noticed people searching the bushes outside the local courthouse -- guns and drugs are worth more than returnable cans. If you leave anything there don't expect it to be there when you come back....

Actually I find the whole article rather funny. What a bunch of clueless people to think that they could take weapons into a courthouse. They get what they deserve in my opinion.

I wonder why people don't pick up the legal ones when they leave. Probably think they will be charged with something.

I think the problem isn't thugs carrying "weapons" into courthouses. It's everyday folks carrying a pocketknife, a cutting TOOL, into courthouses. People should never be persecuted for simply carrying tools with them. A knife only becomes a weapon when it's used as a weapon.

I agree 100% aramis. You should not be persecuted for carrying a tool. Unfortunately the people at the courthouse doors do not know the purpose that you are carrying your knife for. Leaving a knife at the door and picking it up later does not seem to be that big an inconvenience to me.

A buddy of mine was a sherrif at the Morristown,NJ courthouse for years before he retired. He said it's usually people not going to court themselves but accompanying a friend that forget what they have in their pockets. He's seen people throw knives, pot, cocaine, etc into those little trays because they forgot they had it. Of course he then had to arrest them for stupidity.

One of those "tools" looks like one of our products. I've emailed them for a better picture. Upper right corner: SOG Bowie?

This reminds me of an interesting experience I had last year.

On the last weekend before election day, President-to-be Bush made his only stop in NJ, at Drew University, and I went to see him. Fortunately, I was by myself becuase my wife & kid would never have stood for the 2+ hour wait on line to get into the auditorium. About halfway through the wait on the winding line through the wooded campus, it filtered back down the line that the cause for the delay was that they were making everyone pass through metal detectors. I had a sudden "oh, no" moment, and started to look around for a "drop" to leave my EDC for later. I never carry anything big, so it was probably my Delica (I don't recall), but I was still nervous about making the cops at the door nervous. After some thought, realizing that in the pitch dark, unfamiliar campus I would be lucky to find my car, much less a knife hid by a tree  , I decided to chance it. Could they really think I would make an assasination attempt with a 3" knife ?? Anyway, as it turns out, by the time I got to the door of the auditorium, the place was packed full and they had the doors wide open. I guess the remaining standing room was considered low risk. I could barely see the speakers, much less make a rush to the stage with my Delica!

I saw a similiar event as RH had when candidate Bush came to my home town last fall. One of the local people was cutting signs for display, when they sent us out so the bomb dogs could do one last check of the building. When they lest us back in, the person showed a 3 inch lockblade to the Secret Service guy, and asked if they could take it back in to finish cutting some signs. He just kinda laughed and said "yeah OK, we aren't worried about a knife that size" and let them in with it.

On the other hand, when Clinton came to a nearby town about 20 miles away, they set up at the entrances and took ALL knives even SAK's, and refused to return them. 3 months later the local city PD auctioned them off and keep the money.

Ten or fifteen years back I went to Washington DC. I was doing the touristy stuff and back then my high tech knife was a bucklite- similer in size and shape to the 110- the shorter version of the 110. I took it everywhere and when I got to the whitehouse I caused a little attention to come to me.... I was solo and did not try to hide it.... when the Secret service guys started to buzz- the head guy came over and I said something stupid along the lines of "yeah right I came here and threw it in the pan and figure on taking over the country with it- especially against your guns" then I did say that if it was that big a deal and they felt that threatened by it to keep it- I really was not looking for trouble- I just thought it a good idea to have "something" in the deadliest city in the world.... the guy kinda looked me over and sent me through.... I am sure they watched me but I had no unusual restrictions on my visit. I would NOT say anything like that today- I mean for pitty's sake I had a leatherman taken at a court house a few months back and when joking with the officers- they were not amused.... OH the ignorence of youth
