Hi again oregon :)

They have a Union Jack on the front page. Click that and you'll get the English version of the site.

Shipping to the US looks to be an additional 31 euros. They have a link to a "sales and exportation rules " page, but the link's dead... They seem to accept at least Visa and Mastercard.

FWIW, I'd pay max $20 for that. But I like it a lot though.

WOW I may have to get one of those. Let me know if you buy one and how hard it was to get. I wish I spoke french now. That knife for that price is a deal. I have never had an Opinel but that looks cool.

Buy a regular opinel #8 and some sandpaper. You can make that out of your opinel, if you want a time-consuming project.

Thank you for the assistance Way-O. May you live for a thousand years.

I've ordered 10 for a total of 101 euros (includes shipping of 31 euros) from the French site using the Union Jack button for the English version. I estimate conversion 101 Euros x 1.223 = $124/10 knives = unit cost $12-$13. I received an immediate email confirming the order from couteaux-courty.com.

I will post the outcome and actual unit price once my cc billing with this transaction arrives and the blades arrive. The order page did not have a place for my state so I suppose that my zip code takes care of that. However, I put the state next to the city but in brackets.

All the best,

oregon

My No8 Opinel had looked a bit sad, ever since the day that I lit my Kelly Kettle without realising that my knife was inside - wedged across the chimney!!

I modded it by filing the blade down to more of a drop point, trimming down the charred handle, sanding it and applying Colron finishing wax.

I really like the knife now.
Its coming out to the BBQ with me right now...

Hello Steven, heat treatment, Andrews,

Couteau De Barbecue

Trial by fire and it survived. Now that is a knife. Looks very similar to the Couteau De Jardin (knife of the garden). Brilliant photograph, nice background, perfect lighting and quite clear. My knife photos look like a child's sketch compared to yours. Like something photographed in a closet at night.

Strangely, I intend to place a skull bead lanyard into the lanyard hole of the garden knife when it arrives. As if it needed decoration. The utilitarian plainness of the Opinels from the factory is pleasing to the eye as is.

Wax finish you say. Does it attract pocket lint? Good grippy feel?

Burn some barbeque for me.

All the best,

oregon

Oregon,
Finished the BBQ...I'm stuffed! The picture was easy to take - I have a fairly inexpensive Fuji FinePix 2MegaPix camera. It was a sunny day so I just turned the flash off and stood over our leather "pouff" and shot the pic. No tripod or lightbox.

The wax finish feels similar to the Opinel factory finish. It is not tacky, so I do not see pocket lint being a problem.

I highly recommend have a go at modding a standard Opinel.

I have the tool-skills of Mr Bean and mine turned out ok!

Got em today. 10 Opinel Couteau De Jardin N08 with Sandvik 12C27 stainless blade steel. It only took 12 days from internet order, with
Courty & Fils in Paris France, to receipt at my Oregon PO Box. The shipping box, clean and clearly marked, was well packed. The individually boxed (brown paper with green printing) knives, each with a brochure, are packed in shrinkwrap 6 boxes at a wack.

The one knife I've opened is quite handsome: blade clean, lock-ring bright and without flaw and the wood is blond with light brown grain and clear of defect. Nail nic is big and deep enough and logically placed on the blade. The twist-lock works well, tightly locking the blade open and closed. The words "Opinel" & "Inox" and the hand pointing at the crown are very crisply indented into the base of the blade (it doesn't look like the typical stamping, perhaps it is laser cut). The handle has has the words "OPINEL" and "Savoie-France" set onto the surface in elegant sharp black font.

The blade needs more than just a few passes on the steel. It cuts paper. I have gotten out the Edge Pro and will put some more sharp on the blade. The point could be made more pointy but it is a garden knife, no matter how much it looks like a bushcrafter modified regular Opinel.

I would buy from Courty again. No complaints. Like the service and the product. Unit cost about $13.

Later that same day: Note, after inspecting all 10 pieces: 3 pieces had very difficult to deploy closed lock positions. Wrapped lockring in a cloth and repeatedly forced lock in blade closed position plus added small, drops from toothpick, amount of food grade mineral oil. Locks became easier to employ.

Best,

oregon

These are mine, a search in the European forum should bring up some really nice ones:

You will enjoy your knife(one was enough), if you drop it down you will not have any regrets, a very good slicer inexpensive.
Fell free if you need any translations.
Regardsfrom France

Don Luis,

Terrific looking mods to your fine cutlery. I like your lanyards: some pull and some safety loop. Thank you kindly for the link to the European forum.

Garonne,

I appreciate your offer of translation. You are all right. I've been using the translation service at Google and I think the results are generally understandable. For example, here is this post in French:

Mettez Luis, mods regardants terribles à vos couverts fins.

All the best,

hum...
what to say... :D
a bit funny translation from a french point a view, but still understandable anyway...

You could have great fun in "customising" your opinels, it's almost a "national sport" here ! :)
i am two-left handed and i myself succeed to do some "not-too-huggly" job on it !
