Not being too familiar with the stickfighting terminology of the English language, I would appreciate it if somebody could explain the difference between a "covering umbrella" and a "roof block".

Hi Rofs,

Terminology differs between factions...

To me a roof block for a weapon held in the right hand slopes down to the left... providing cover for the head.

An umbrella would slope down to the right(forearm vertical and drop point towards the ground)... protecting you from a blow coming from your right diaganol.

I believe some groups use the exact opposite definition, and some groups use completely different terminology. I believe Edgar Sulite referred to what I call a umbrella as a "plume" (sp?)... a "pen block" (i.e.- holding a pen).

So... I don't think there is a definitive answer.

The Roof Block I am familiar with is as Kev describes. The "umbrella" I do is a type of moving roof block, a sweeping motion going over the head in order to chamber the stick hand for another out side blow; example for another #1. The roof continues back over the head, left arm up(if right handed) to guide/protect almost scraping the back to get into position again.

Kinda hard to describe, you really have to see it. Hope this helps!

I have learned different terms for the above. For example, the "roof" block and the "umbrella' block are the same thing, that is the right hand holds the weapon and the tip of the weapon points downward to the left. When the right hand holds the weapon and the weapon tip points downward to the right it's known as a "slanting" block, a "shoulder" block, a "wing" block, or in Filipino- a "Payong" block. The reality is that there are so many different names for the same movement it's hard to keep track. I suggest that you find the term that you like best and not worry about the dozen others. Just a suggestion.
