Another opportunity to go to a cow roundup with my family.

This was a local one, and small. Only 130 calves. The ropers drag them out from the smaller pen 2 at a time.

I ran irons all day. My older boy (nearly 13) participated, and the 8 year old watched (I tried to convince him it was time he joined in).

I had a double handful of sharp objects (including this yellow rose stockman)... the others were a Northfield 36 sunfish, Schrade 73 (GEC made), a SAK pioneer, two opinel (one stainless and one carbon) and a Congress pattern German knife (plus, I had two more stockman's I left in the rig... an old timer and a buck). Too many..... and none got used this year. In past years we have had to cut a lot. These calves were all small enough to band.

Good times I'm sure! I ain't cattle farmed in years, but I do miss it at times. Being small appalachian farmers we was always able to band ours. Miss the neighbors helping neighbors aspect of it, getting to be a rare thing. Our land was to steep for hay, but the neighbors had plenty. We would help them put up hay and in return we would get enough for us to. I learned to drive in a hay field, being to little to pick up the bales got ya driving duty lol. Like Horsewright, I thank you for the boost to the ol memory :)

What pattern is the yellow rose?

Very cool! Glad to see your boys there. We experimented with banding a few years ago. Didn't work for us. Our neighbors band though Bigfattyt Bigfattyt Ya keep this up and I'm gonna have to make ya some leggings!

They seem to have the banding thing figured out.

Most years we don't have to cut. One year we had to do a lot. The cows came early, the roundup got pushed back, and a bunch of the calves were too big for the bander. They make adult bull benders too, but they are way too bit for the calves.
