Hi!

I was surfing along some knife links and I came accross this page: http://www.nttl-net.ne.jp/knifehousehara/Cowry.htm It describes 2 powder metallurgy steels from Daido Steel. Some figures about the steels:
<pre>
C Cr Mo V Nb HRC
Cowry-X 3.0 20.0 1.0 0.3 --- 66-68
Cowry-Y 1.25 14.5 3.0 1.0 0.3 ?
</pre>
So what do you think about these?

Hugo.
(ok, so HTML tables dont work

...how about pre?)

Hugo,
I use and have used both cowery steels in three bar laminates , I prefer the cowery Y as it is extremely fine grained and holds a great edge it is easy to sharpen .It also has incredible corrosion resistance. I can get it sharper than any other steel I've ever used and I like it best at 61-63 Rc.I don't know why but it can handle the hardness where other steels would be to brittle . It's short commings are it's cost and heat treating I have the heat treating done by Daido. as it is complicated or so they say .
Great stuff!

Thanks Ken!
How expensive are those? For instance compared to some of the more familiar high-end steels like CPM-440V or 420V?
Oh, and how would the edge holding compare to these steels also? The Y seems very nice, but the X really looks like a wonder steel with very good edge holding coupled with good stainless qualities (the high Cr?). RC 66-68 just sounds very high...

Hugo.

Ken has showed me this stuff...interesting all right.....i dont think expensive is the right term...more like impossible to get at the present time.
