There are four configurations you can order this knife in.

The standard configuration with a racing edge is what folks like Dan race with. The thick edge is a somewhat thicker grind geometry and edge angle which is more durable but less competitive. The small configuration is the same blade geometry as the standard configuration but with a smaller handle for smaller people like Jo.

DEK1
The 4" DEK1 was designed as a collaboration with Lorien Arnold. It is a well made, high performance, medium size EDC utility knife that is a little dressier than most of our other offerings. The steel is Crucible CPM 3V at HRC 60.5 with a fully optimized heat treat with very good edge retention and edge stability. You'll be surprised how sharp this gets and how well it holds an edge. If you have never used highly optimized 3V this hard and thin, it will blow your mind.

A side effect of this heat treat is a higher percentage of free chromium, so although it is not stainless, it is nearly so.

This steel with this heat treat will support a fine edge, so this has narrow primary grinds and was taken under .020" before sharpening and it was sharpened 20 degrees per side. This is a fine cutting edge, but this knife is extremely durable. They're lightly hand ground after machining to give it a slight convex S grind. For a practically unbreakable knife it cuts like a laser. I'll do a video when I get a chance, I promise you'll be impressed with this knife's cutting ability and durability.

It balances between the first two fingers and is intended to be carried as a practical EDC utility knife, but the DEK1 is also specifically designed to be used as a weapon with a hand grip shaped specifically to lock into the shape on the inside of your hand grip when held across the palm at an angle (saber grip) and 90 degrees to the arm when held point down, edge out, with the thumb over the butt (reverse grip) with swells, cutouts, ramps and moderate jimping assuring a very solid reliable grip that indexes into position without looking at it and does not shift around with vigorous "use". Despite lacking a reinforced point or appearing menacing, this is a serious weapon.

Price includes a good kydex sheath. We have a good general purpose sheath with TecLoc that can be configured for vertical and horizontal carry, and we're working on some possible additional sheath options that may be available to you when we ship, if so Jo will clarify your preferences before shipping.

Skinner / Basic Drop Point D2 Hunter / Kitchen Knife

(3/28/2009) Blade is 3 5/8" hollow ground, 7 3/8 OAL. $140 Sold! D2 with cold treatment and tempered to HRC 62. This is the perfect steel for this kind of knife (IMO) and this is a high quality HT that has been proven to perform. 304 stainless pins. Comes with a nice basic leather pouch sheath. This has a high thin hollow grind taken to .018" at the edge, which is relatively thin, so it is not for rough use, but it cuts very well and will still withstand some abuse. It will be sharpened for your intended use before I ship.

(2/6/2011) This has a high thin hollow grind taken down to .015" at the edge, then tapered to .010 at the tip. Very black (and very old) ebony. D2 with cryo and tempered to HRC 62. This is a high quality HT that is proven to perform. The edge is thin and extremely sharp. Blade is 3 5/8" hollow ground, 7 3/8 OAL. Basic belt finish followed with tumbling and Scotchbrite (nothing fancy).

(8/16/2013) The D2 skinner is my skinning knife pattern. It is hard (HRC61) and thin and cuts like a laser beam and holds an edge very well. It has a thin high (past tangent) hollow grind that was taken to .013" before sharpening. It was sharpened by hand on oil stones to a fiendishly sharp tree topping acute edge.

Some of the skinners were around .010" at the edge, ground above tangent (like a straight razor) and sharpened around 13 DPS in hard D2. They would flex some over your thumb nail and a couple would ring a little when stropped. They'd pop a free standing hair and would slice through meat and hide like a light saber. When pulling the hide off the rib cage there's a few little muscles that attach the skin to the flanks that you sometime need to cut or they'll tear meat that you may or may not care about. These could be severed while under tension with a tiny little tap of the blade. When pulling the intestines and other bits from inside the pelvis (I don't cut these, I tie them off) there are bits of connective tissue holding them in place than could be severed with the lightest touch of the blade. I'd hold the butt of the handle in the palm of my hand and extend the blade out along my index finger like an extension of the finger and disconnect bits without pulling on them like a magic wand. These blades were sharp and stayed sharp though an entire season of use (no need to resharpen during a hunt) but you did not want to use one to split a rib cage or pelvis, they weren't built for that and you'd loose a chunk out of the blade.
