Is there anyway to tell if a Fiddleback is CPM 154 without trying to force a patina? Just wondered if you guys have found any way to tell?

Thanks,

Martin

154 is fiddletextured only I believe.... also I don't think Andy has done any tapered tangs in 154. So, fiddletexture + SFT = good chance its 154.

I don't own or have never owned a SS one, but from pics it looks like the texture is different. I think on the 01 spalted version its more of a random pattern. Im not sure if stainless would take to the spalting, so I think Andy textures it to mimic spalting. It would likely not be as dark and have more of a pattern to it. Again, this is all speculation as I have never owned a fiddlebacks in CPM.

I just got this one Northridge88 and Bonafide was the original seller. He listed it as O1, but it look different to me. I have never had a CPM154 Fiddleback before.

What do you guys think?

If it has 3D Spalting, tapered tang, it's not Stainless. I'd try and force a very small patina on the tang of the blade. Maybe use a very small piece (1/4 the size of a match head) of onion or garlic. All it needs is a little bit of the juice. If and when it patinas, lightly strop it away. I've found that stropping is the easiest way to remove patina. Some 01 steel takes some effort to patina so be patient.
Stainless is also a $60 upgrade.

The blade in question doesn't necessarily look stainless. I believe Andy Fiddletextures his stainless and 01. Send it to me and I'll report back to you in a year or so with an absolute answer.

I would guess stainless too, although not sure about that.

Andy has made "fiddletextured O1" blades. Same finish as SS blades, but the texturing usually has darker spots similar in color to the spalted O1. Leads me to think this one is SS. See this thread for examples of fiddletextured O1 and CPM 154: Fiddleback Friday 11/8/13. Two fiddletextured O1 Bushfingers vs two fiddletextured CPM 154 Bushfingers (as well as Woodchuck and EDCII).

You don't have to force a patina to find out. Just cut up an apple. You'll find out quickly.

If I'm not mistaken, this was a dealer knife from bladeco or lee's; I tried finding it in an FBF and couldn't. Kirkwood is right in that 154 fiddletexturing is not as dark as the 01 version, so I'm still guessing 154. When in doubt, do what Duder recommended and use a small piece of onion or garlic.

Thanks, Duder for the info.

Kirk, thanks for the link. The picture of the stainless do look the same as this one. I will try to cut something and see what happens.

I think it may be stainless based on everyone's input being that is SFT and the color of the Fiddletextured.

Stainless would either have Fiddletexture (also on some O1 blades) or this texture (S35VN):

Cutting an apple or putting a dab of mustard on it for a couple of minutes will remove any doubts ;)

Either way, congrats on that Bushfinger! That's a nice looking blade man. I prefer Andy's stainless over the 01 stuff. It gets crazy, scary, stooopid sharp. Like really sharp.

I really like that Recluse! I can look at that pic all day.

It looks like Fiddletexture only started showing up in the 11/1/13 batch so only really recent knives would have it, stainless or not. Here is a CPM154 Ladyfinger that has a closer to normal spalting. Only difference with this one is that I think it's only 1 of 3 that Andy made with the spalting extending down into the grind. The other two were the same as this one but I think they possibly had a different pin configuration. I also used to have another stainless Ladyfinger that I think was from before Andy started really doing the textured spalting.

Here is an old group photo that shows the other CPM154 Ladyfinger I used to have. It's Paduk w/ black bolsters.

looks like stainless to me
but the lighting and angle makes it tough to tell

When that knife was recently listed, I thought that it looked stainless to me, but because some of the 01 knives are fiddle textured I can't say why. Let us know what you find out.

Rubbed Garlic on the spine (multiple times) about 1 hour ago with no changes....yet!!!

Thanks for all the input everyone. This forum is the best!!!!

Yeah that's definitely the 3/16 CPM-154 Osage Bushfinger that Bladecousa had a few batches back. I recognized it when it was listed as O1 but didn't want to be "that" guy. I almost bought it from bladeco to try Andy's stainless, but I prefer one with a little higher grind. You can actually still see pictures of it on the bladecousa homepage.
