I am wondering about people's thoughts on CPM-15V in a modern fixed blade for general utility in the ~4" range?

Does it lack the toughness in modern heat treatment to be a reasonable choice today? Spyderco is apparently going to be releasing one in their Mule Team series in this steel so, while I think a Magnacut would be a better choice for me, that isn't an option!

TIA,
Sid

On Larrin's charts, 15V is roughly the same toughness as M390, so if you consider M390 as suitable for a "general utility" fixed blade, 15V will probably work. If I'm able to get a 15V Mule, I'll be very happy.

If you want a good general use Mule, there is the SPY27 Mule 2, which is a regular production item and stainless. Won't hold an edge as long as 15V but SPY27 is pretty nice stuff.

Depends on what you expect of your 4" knife . 🤷‍♂️

If it's got BBB's heat treatment, I would think it would be amazing. The edge strength seems to be pretty impressive from the youtube videos of the Manix in that steel.

But yeah, depends on what you want to use it for.
