Is anyone working with this yet? I noticed that Bark River made a machete using 1V and was intrigued. The toughness should be amazing and the edgeholding should make this the steel that fixes everything undesirable about S7. At least for large chopping tools.

Also, is there even a source for small bars?

You can contact nsm nsm
Niagara Specialty Metals.

Last time I checked, they had some bars of it. You'll have to commit to buying a whole piece from the bars they have available, not just a small 12" piece for making one knife.

If want a beater knife I would use something cheaper like 5160 or 8670 and if I want some high end large knife I would stick with CPM-3V.

Dan Keffeler has demonstrated that 3V is tough enough for large waki that can be cut 2x4 in single chop I thought it should be tough enough for almost everything.

Scott Gossman from Gossman Knives Gossman Knives is using it with great results. Almost as tough as S7 steel (he subjects his knives to brutal tests so he proved this statement) and with satisfactory edge retention, if I remember correctly. For something big like a Machete, I would use 8670 or S7. Or even 4140 or 4340, from a good source, but I am too extreme in the toughness department.

We have about 600 pounds of sheet in stock that can be cut to width and shipped within a few days. Current thicknesses are .140", .160", .207" and .275". We have another 6,000 pounds of slab that can be turned in to sheet on short notice. We haven't had much demand for CPM 1-V as a knife grade so we don't list it in our online store but you can call us at 800-424-0048 or email info@nsm-ny.com for price and availability.

I've worked for 1V for about a year now and it, heat treated right works well as a knife steel. It's hold an edge well, is tough as hell and can be hardened and tempered to 60rc. I've heard the same thing about S7 not being a good knife steel but have been using S7 for 14 years and made a lot of knives with it with no complaints. If you are looking at an impact steel, check out Z Tuff. It's unreal tough and easy to get in smaller sizes.

SOME that say S7 is not a knife steel probably also say that D2 is a tough steel and a good steel for a chopper!
