CPM-20CV Heat Treat?

So I've read a ton about how amazing the new heat treat is on the 3v used by Survive! I'm wondering how it is on the 20cv? I have a 4.1 in 3v on preorder, but I'm thinking of also getting one in 20cv. I love the idea of not having to worry about rust (no matter how good the new 3v is, it'll still be more rust prone than 20cv).

Thoughts?

Check out the black scout video on one if the below threads. His is 20cv. I got my 7/7 in 3v but my 3.5 in 20cv. So I'm hoping to experience both very soon.

The few blades I've had in M390, very similar to 20CV, stayed sharp ridiculously long and never rusted even being used around (and in) water constantly.

To further complicate your choice, maybe they'll have CPM154 as an option when 4.1 are available again?

For my 4.1, I'll be going with 20CV because I want the extra edge retention and I hate (HATE!) when my EDC knives rust from being against my clothing, or in the water, during the hot parts of the year.

This is the exact reason I shot for 20cv on my 3.5. If its going to be my edc I expect it to crawl threw the mud and muck with me just as all the others that hadn't made it. I suspect the 3.5 will excel in all the areas the others failed though.

The CPM-20CV heat treat has been optimized with the new production. As a result, we believe there is better edge holding and improved toughness over previous batches. That is based on Guy beating the shit out of them and the reduced belt life when sharpening them. People will notice that the CPM-20CV blades have a more polished edge, because Guy is able to push harder when he is at the buffer, without rolling the edge.

Awesome news! I already love S! 20cv. I been using the necker I got from you guys since its arrived and hadn't sharpened it yet. Still super sharp. And the new stuff is better. Wow!

It's great to hear that he's been beating on them and it's working out well.

I just bought 'GSO-4.7 (Presale)' on SURVIVE! .. oyaaa love seeing that pop up on the screen 20cv as well.... Merry Christmas to Me .. Merry Christmas to Me..

This thread and the others has me wishing I could afford to order a 4.7 in each steel... :( bladeforums makes contentment difficult!

Nice manic and welcome to blade forum and our humble abode.

Oh BTW if its in your heart and all, you know tis the season and such, I wouldn't mind a 4.7 in cpm154. I put it on the Santa list but I don't think Guy's had time to put his elf costume on this year with all the starters.

Elves would be helpful...

OK so I started last Dec. putting my 20cv to the test. I do NOT recommend this with anything but a Survive! It could be hazardous to your blade. It was not a factory edge but it was shaving sharp. For a month now I have been in mud rain and oh yea more mud. In all this time all I did was use wipe and resheath. I has stripped wire, cut cardboard, opened boxes, cut out some sheet rock, trimmed sch40 PVC, pried a few doors locks open( it was legal guys! Honest.), I even used it to cut a steak ( I'm not sure now how sanitary that was). Basically I used it for whatever I needed.

In the end I really did nothing to the steel. Yea I know I dulled the edge, but the steel held up like a champ.

I apologize now for the poor lighting.

You can see there is slight discoloration to the tip and ring area. Where the blade had more water 'settle' around those areas.

The only area I seen any concern arise (keep in mind this is after a month of abuse) was the jimping. I have not cleaned it yet to see what its done but I don't see anything that couldn't just be wiped off yet.

After all this its still got a very good use able edge.

I put my necker II through a summer in the Texas heat inside my boot.(I don't wish that on my worst enemy) It Survived! <- see how I did that ;)

I guess all my ranting and raving boils down to this. I wouldn't do that with just any knife and expect it to last, I know I can with Guy's blades and if the new HT is better the industry is in for something absolutely insane.

It looks like it held up just fine other than a bit of staining. I really wish I would've used the 3.5 I had in 20cv instead of relying only on the 3v. Maybe the 2.7 or a 3.5 in 20cv will make it on the list soon.

20cv is nothing to shrug off. I was impressed with my results, but not surprised with the out come though. In the end this is one of my favorite blades. I know its not the 3.5 or my 5.1 but in day to day use its extremely capable for me and I don't see me parting with this blade.

I regret getting rid of the one I had because I never tried it out on anything other than cutting paper.
