...or if there is another steel in the price range of 300. I'm looking for a large heavy fixed where I can use it for chopping firewood/bone, digging, cutting rope, a tree stand haha. Just very rough use. I usually spend about 1 week in the woods every month and a good knife is paramount to me. One that can handle chopping wood for a week at a time.

Here what I got but can't make a decision:

Fehrman-Extreme Judgment
Blade Size : 9.5" x 2" x .25"
Overall Length : 15"
Steel : CPM-3V

TOPS Armageddon
Steel: 1095 High Carbon Alloy RC-58
Blade Length: 10 5/8" O/A Length: 16 1/2"
Thickness: 1/4"

Then theres the good old Busse FBM, Ive already seen what this knife can do but am having a hard time finding this specific model for sale for the money im willing to spend. I'm not an ebay'er as I don't trust it anymore (ripped off too many times) Let me know what you guy's think.

Lots of reliable knives out there at your price point. Ranger, Ontario, and Scrapyard are the only 3 I've had personal experience with (5160, 1095, and S7). I would put the Scrapyard Dogfather at the top of that list for chopping if that's what you are looking for. Forward weighted, good edge retention, and the ResC handle is very comfortable for that type of field work. Generally a very efficient knife, and relatively light in the hand for it's size. People do speak very highly of the Fehrman you mentioned as well. Probably can't go wrong with anything you've listed.

Either knife will be more than adequate I’m sure.

All the knives you mentioned are able to do anything you will ask of them.

You cannot break any of these unless you do something really dumb like hit rocks with them. In which case, a person is simply too stupid to survive with a knife anyway.

Fehrmans offer the most bang for the buck, and the newest steel. Tops knives are very good quality as well. I’m sure you know all about Busse’s and their offspring.

The TOPS and the Fehrman both look very suited to what you're wanting.

If I may suggest an alternative, check out the RD series from Ranger Knives.

Check Ranger Knives, don't rule out 5160, can't go wrong with 1095 either. I'd leave D2 alone if you are looking for a chopper. No experience with 3V although I hear it's pretty good.

Yeah thats what I was thinking as well, as with those knives they are all designed and have the abilities to do what I've asked but I was unsure about the difference in metals mainly the CPM-3V as I never heard much about that compared to say INFI or the latter mentioned. Also I will definatley check out those other knives listed. It's like any new toy or tool you go round and round in circles lol. Don't even ask me how long it took to buy my TV or how long it took me to choose my forced induction lol.

Thanks for the replies and tips fellas.

EDIT: Ok I looked at the SY DogFather and the RK RD9 and have a question about the steel of the SR-77 and 5160 in comparison to the INFI, 1095, CPM-3V as far as edge retention, sharpening and chip resistance. They all look similar and i suppose my only determining factor now would be the best steel for my usage. Thanks again!

Any of the knives mentioned are great and will serve you well. I happen to be a BIG Fehrman fan. I have knives from all the makers mentioned above and I would choose a Fehrman every time. CPM-3V is a great steel. I do think I would choose a Final Judgement over the Extreme Judgement you have listed above. That is just a personal note. Go with the Fehrman

The Heafner model #17 in cryo treated D2 is a solid choice!! A very efficient chopper with a blade around 8" and over a 1/4" thick all for $250.00

It looks like all these knives will do great, but wouldn't an axe be cheaper? For chopping wood at least

Haha, yes it would be more practical and cheap, but im far from practical :p I suppose I just like the idea of having a knife I can use for everything, heavy and light chores. It's mainly the...hmm...caveman in me I guess, then again cavemen had different tools for different thing so, I really have no excuse lol. In all seriousness it's mainly the idea of it as ax's are so light nowadays I cant really blame it on weight or size.

Slay: Man nice knives brotha  Darn I should have checked back. I ordered the Fehrman EJ last night. You know how it goes though, I planned on buying the "end of all knives" but i know better, I'll be back im sure. I REALLY want a Busse and would like to collect more camp style knives and tacs so I will definatley put that one you listed in my to get list.

Thanks for all the help fellas.

Hey competely understandable. Any of these knives will do anything you want it to. I just figured an axe would be faster and it doesn't need to be super sharp

Congrats on choosing the Fehrman.
Out of all your choices you picked the highest performer.
You won't be disappointed.

BTW, here is an interesting steel chart from a steel vendor.

http://www.cbmfg.com/rawmaterials.htm

You’ll notice several steels that aren’t usually on the charts.

Mod. A-8 for example is what Busse calls INFI, after he does his proprietary heat treat.
S-7 is another steel used in a certain ‘hard use’ brand.

This chart concurs with most knifemakers experience using these steels in their own knives.

As you can see, 3V is pretty special.

Hey Bear I really appreciate the comment and email back. I was pretty happy with my choice but even more so after your email. That's really what I needed and I cant wait to get my paws on it. I'll definatley do a review on the knife since I'll be using the piss out of it lol. Maybe it will also help a few others here with their selection in the future. Shoot man, I'm just tickled I cant wait to get it, ha.

Thanks alot fellas for the opinions and tips as well as alternatives, I can see the knife bug has bitten me as since this order and all your suggestions Ive already made a list I'd like to get and am trying to come up with excuses to tell the ball n chain why I NEED them lol.

...I meant ball n chain affectionately :p
