CPM-3V Espada

Here's the latest in my sword efforts. This is a 19" Espada in CPM-3V with a sharpened swedge. The total weight is about 17 oz., using pretty much all the strength to weight ratio 3V has to offer. This was ground from 0.172" steel and most of that full width is maintained all the way to the swedge. The handle is stabilized Maple Burl.

This represents a full day of grinding, then two more days of finish grinding to get it here. I still ache.

Another nice one Jerry!
Thanks for taking the time to post it.

Looking forward to spending some time with you at the Flint River Show in a couple of months.

Man, Jerry! At 17 oz this Bad Boy has to be lightning fast in the hand. And the maple burl handle really sets off the blade.

Outstanding work as usual, my friend

Jerry -- 19" blade or OAL?

BTW, I know you are unconcerned with such superficial issues, but that's got to be the BEST LOOKING sword I've seen from your hand. The lines are just breathtaking, IMHO. And the burl, the burl...but the BURL!

Great blade Jerry, got a question, is the choil area unground/unsharpened so one can choke up on it, or possibly use 2 hands?

Sorry -- guess I was just a little stunned with the looks of that beauty. Obviously has to be a 19" blade. You know, that kind of thing has happened to me once or twice when looking at women, too. Hard to take it all in and make sense of it at the same time, when it looks that good!

Peligrosas--verdad Mario? Las dos!

Yep, 19" blade.

Rob, that area is called the "forte". It is unground for most of its length and completely unsharpened. Its primary porpose to to catch opponents' blades without endangering your own edge. You can also use that area to choke up, but I wouldn't recommend a thrust from that position.

Thanks for the nice remarks folks.

Will, esta maldita te corta si solamente la miras crusada. Es como una mujer de gran bellesa y mal intento.

Rob, the forte region works great if you're caught short and are forced to block a hard blow rather than parry it.

Mario--De veras.

Thanks for the explanation, all this swordfighting stuff is Greek to me! And yes Jerry, wouldnt want to thrust from there!

Jerry, beautiful piece. Handling Mario's A2 version was nice, but I would imagine this 3v version to be that much better.

Cool knife Jerry,

Hows the 3v for sharpening in the field? Im working on a batch and have no idea how they are gonna sharpen in the cold, wet, woods.

They sharpen like they grind Matt, with difficulty. I'd suggest a diamond stone, though a ceramic rod might do for a touchup.

Sing...There is a world of difference in feel between 3V Black Espada and the original A2 espada that you played with. Since it was a new design that he knew I was going to test to its limits, Jerry purposefully over-engineered the A2 prototype for safety.

The 3V E feels and moves just like a Bowie- I kid you not. When my Black E is finished, I'm sure that we can arrange an opportunity for you to play with it- in exchange for a chance to swing your Bruce Evans bowies

. Maybe we can find time to get together for some cutting practice with a few of our blades?

Steve...Man, you lucky dog you! What a stellar piece. I wish that I could see your face the first time that you start flowing with this baby. I really look forward to your feedback as an experienced bladesman.

Matt...The 3V blades that I've used seem to hold their edge extremely well. I've trained with my 3V Challenger, for instance, several times per week for months now and it has yet to need a touch up to the edge. To see what it would take to sharpen it, however- and simply because I can't resist fiddling with my blades

- I've tried various Arkansas and Japanese stones on it, as well as ceramic and DMT diamond hones. I've found that the DMT diamond hones work far and away the best. DMT makes a small two-sided hone designed like a balisong with plastic covers that flip back to expose the honing 'blade' which I've found to be ideal for resharpening knives in the field. I usually keep one in my backpack.

Sigh.... drool.. sigh...

Hey my father and I are going to gamble end of this week - a ritual father and child bonding type of thing - the only way we can play superheores.

I usually make it a rule not to have anythign in mind (i.e. temptations) and keep my heart pure when I play cards but hell looking at this blade might make it difficult.. sweet blade Jerry. Too bad it's not in yoru shop anymore..
