CPM-3V folder

Only one I can think of off hand is the Strider SNG. I don't think 3v is optimal for a folder though. It's main attribute, toughness, can't be fully appreciated in a folder.

Im a huge strider fan so had to jump in and correct. Strider SMF is their option with 3v and they offer them in all the handle configs except the aluminum(my favorite). There will be Strider SnG's released with 3v and carpenters version PD-1 sometime soon so keep your eye out.
and whoever says 3v cant be appreciated in a folder obviously hasnt owned a Strider SMF or SnG ;) I own a SMF 3v in gunner grips and all i have to say is WOW.

btw would also help people to give you info if you opened up the private message option in your user profile

Small correction: it's the SMF, not the SnG, that Strider has done a couple of limited 3V runs in. (As far as I know, Strider doesn't have any plans for a run of SnGs in 3V.) But yeah, other than that, I can't think of any current production folders that use the steel. As Popsickle mentioned, the Spyderco Tuff will use 3V, but it probably won't be out until sometime next year.

However, there are lots of makers of custom folders who do (or, by request, can) use 3V, so if you're willing to invest a bit more in terms of time and money, you should be able to get a knife that's exactly what you're wanting.

i had no idea Neuron, thank you.

It has wear resistance similar to D2, which is too much hassle for some people, so it overs that along with toughness. Paying the cost for a PM steel of such toughness is a bit much when 440C gets the job done, but same can be said for paying the premium for gobs of vanadium for wear resistance like S90V. But if a tough, very low wear resistant, no corrosion resistant steel like 1095 is popular for folders that have been around for decades, then no steel choice can be really wrong... Just keep in mind what you're buying. PD1 is a PM version of the cruwear alloy, little different.

Thanks for the correction. I'm not a huge Strider fan and got 'em mixed up.

Reese Weiland made a nice CF/Ti folder he called the Hybrid. I owned the proto for a while. It used to be my church carry knife but 3V is no joke.

True, you can only swing a 4" blade so hard before it becomes ridiculous. Though I wonder if toughness is the attribute to have when you expect to run your blade against metal frequently?

3v was from cruwear
PD-1 was developed from the original vascowear formula and tweaked(engineered) a bit more by carpenter
3V shares as much with Cru-wear as it does with Vascowear, same for PD-1. Vascowear and Cru-wear are very similar, some nickel and a half pointof chrome. PD-1 matches carbon content but misses silicon, while 3V has less carbon, moly, less silicon, added tungsten, manganese, more vanadium. They are not exact matches, but neither are Lescowear, PGK, Z-wear, 1.2895, Sleipner, or DC-53. I mentioned Cru-wear because you can't get Vascowear.

Congrats Popsickle!

Will you give us a review after you get it? It's a steel I've wanted to try for a few years.

Joe

Toughness is never wasted in any knife.

A thin edge cuts better than a thick edge.

The toughness of 3V allows you to have a thin edge that is less prone to rolling or chipping.

I am also very interested in this blade steel. I placed an order to a custom knifemaker in Oregon with this blade steel. The folder will be in a tanto blade. Looking forward to it, the only problem is the delivery date is sometime summer of 2012. We shall see.

Cheers.
