Finished this one up yesterday and after some discussion on my forum I decided to call it Dragon's Bane. Curious about what others think given the size of this, is it a short sword or big knife or are those all the same thing? This seems to be kind of a tweener for me.

It is made of .0201" thick CPM 3V with a 12-1/8" blade edge, flat ground primary bevel and it is 17-5/8" overall. It has a Paul Bos heat treat to 58+/- RC which gives it tremendous toughness (Almost twice that of A2 and 3X that of S30V). The top edge is sharp on this one and is hollow ground.

The handle is Carbon Fiber with a bonk/glass breaker and lanyard hole reliefed in the butt, as well as four small pins and one corby bolt all stainless steel. Additionally, there are two 3/8" titanium tubes with the rear one place for additional indexing traction.

Here are some pics for you...

Cordially,
Eric

For me, if you can get two hands on the handle it's a short sword, but it looks like a honkin' big knife to me.
And a very, very nice one at that.

Very nice. I just had a few 3V samurai swords heat-treated (By Peter's HT) and was wondering if you had any finishing tips? I've heard it can be a real bear, so...

Hey thanks for the comments...I appreciate the feedback on the 'Big Knife.'

Michael kind of a chuckle to get this question from you. Like Mathew Gregory said earlier. My best advice may be a little late in coming for you since you have already heat treated. I do as much work as possible in the annealed state. Once it is back figure extra belts from what you are used to...I do a lot of S30V but 3V takes more patience. That is it fresh belts and time. It will take a reasonably nice satin finish. Like anything make sure it is clean from the last grit and pace your self and it will all clean up fine.

Hope that helps,
Eric

Ricky, Thanks these big choppers are pretty fun...

I had a little time yesterday to do a quick test before a family dog walk. Never done more than one bottle or milk jug before and had been wanting to try. Plus this is a great knife for this little exercise. this was my second chop, first one was of eight but the camera which does a burst of pics missed the high point of the chop. Additionally, on the first chop, as the table is a little low I am doing the pitcher stretch to get lower and ended up taking the tops right off but got almost no water. For the second one I tried to slow my swing a little and by the time I go to the sixth it was starting to fall down...LOL...needed a Couple cases from Costco for practice. Fun stuff though and my daughter got a kick out of it.

Cordially,
Eric

Thanks. And, what... I don't know everything!! :-) These high vanadium steels are new to me and I ruined a ton of my 320 belts on those Cru-Forge V blades a while back. I know this 3V will be the same. Anyway, thanks for the tips and next time I post I'll be sure to act all superior and lord down on all you lesser mortals - lol
