Can anyone tell me the differences between those two steels? I heard that BRKT comes out with a Bravo 1 in CPM 3V. Isn't that a no brainier if one does not mind "oiling"?? But how is 3G compared?
Thanks folks!
A.

As a chopper I would assume that the 3V would be better than Fallkniven's 3G [laminated with Special Gold Powder Steel in the center.] .I've never used my fallkniven 3G as a chopper it's only 4" of blade .
For other uses I think the 3G would be better. Both are very fine steels ,examples of what you might call super steels.

They're two very, very different steels. 3V has very high toughness combined with good (comparable to S30V) wear resistance, but it isn't stainless. 3G has higher wear resistance but is relatively brittle at the high hardnesses you need to run it to get the most out of the steel, and is also stainless. So like the previous poster said, which one is best will really depend on how you'll be using the knife.

3V has high toughness and wear resistance near D2. SGPS is stainless, and BLUNTRUTH, Ankerson, Vassili, myself, and who knows who else have found it to hold an edge about as well as AUS8.

Ok, thanks guys. Now, might be a repetitive question but what would you consider the best steel for a 3/16", 6-7" long camp knife, whether stock removal or forged. A knife that I use from food prep to hunting to batoning?
Looking forward to the replies!

As you mention Fallkniven, you might want to take a look at their A1, it's VG10 steel.

I've got both a TK2 (3G Steel) and A1 (VG10) and think Fallkniven are some of the best knives around. There's plenty of reviews and online articles on the A1; it can be used for chopping as well as batoning and food prep (although it's a thick blade and isn't the best for that).

I'd definitely go for CPM-3V in a longer blade like that, and because of 3V's toughness at 3/16" thick it will be as tough as most steels at .25" thick or more.

For a blade like that, if the choice was just between 3V and 3G, I'd go for 3V without any question whatsoever. In fact, 3V is one of the best choices for a blade like that regardless of what other steels it's being compared to.
