I know, only Busse offers the INFI steel and it seems pretty awesome.
Read where CPM 3V has about the best combination of toughness and wear resistance to be had but is less rust resistant than INFI.
Which steel do you guys think is the best overall and why ?

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Thebestforwhat?

A knife consists of materials, design, blade geometry, heat treatment, and other manufacturing steps. Busse seems to do all of that well.

Which line of CPM 3V knives would you like to compare them to? :)

I think they are both excellent steels. One major advantage to CPM3V is that it can be had frpm a number of makers. INFI is only available from one source. I like Busses, but I also like variety.

Some of that depends on the format of the knife made of it.
For the rest, we'll have to wait for a metallurgist to answer! :D

There has been an in-depth discussion of both steels. Search button is your friend.

Searched again and found Fehrman vs Busse and got some pretty good information there.
Looks like both steels are plenty tough.

Pure strength, impact resistance, toughness etc. ;)

I have seen issues with toughness and strength with 3V but only on a small sample (two knives). On paper it looks very good, but in practical use it has not been personally impressive.

I have and have had several Busse knives (INFI),however, I have sold some of my Busse knives so that I can buy more Fehrman Knives (CPM3V). Some people are just Bussephiles and won't accept that there are other knives out there that are JUST AS GOOD. I personally would buy Fehrman now instead of Busse. I like the CPM 3V even though it may take a little more PM to keep the rust away.

Both will out perform you, it really wont matter which one you get because they cam both take more abuse than you will give.

That should be the first point every time a "which is better" question comes up on high end steel or knives. The limiting factor in most cases is the user: his needs and his abilities. Rarely do these rise to a level these steels can't handle.

You adjust the profile of an edge until it fails so as to maximize the cutting performance. Thus the strength and toughness of a steel are critical to performance.

3V is one of my favorite steels. I have folders and fixed blades made out it and love them. For me though on a large chopper pry thingy I like other tool steels alot better just because they are easier to sharpen after hitting concrete or nails. Infi is a great steel but Busse's are too pricey for my liking.
