I am thinking of purchasing a knife with a blade made of CPM 3Y stainless. I am not familiar with this steel and when I search the Crucible web site, I do not find a 3Y stainless, only the 3V tool steel. Is this a good blade steel? Does it normally go by another name?

Thanks for helping to educate a new forum member!

Are you sure you dont mean 3V? i have never herd or seen anything about 3Y????

Rifter,

Nope, 3Y and they say it's stainless. I know from Crucible's web site that 3V is a tool steel; never heard of a stainless CPM 3Y. but then I'm rather new to this...

Can you give us specifics about the knife itself?

3Y has got to be a mistake. It's either CPM 3V or CPM S30V.

CPM S30V is very popular right now. It appears to be a very good knife steel for larger companies like Benchmade. Many custom knifemakers are using it as well.

Like any steel, the HEAT TREAT process makes all the difference in the world.

Gentlemen:

You are in fact correct! It is 3V.
Crucible lists their 3V as a tool steel, separate from their stainless such as S30V.
Is 3V good for a blade and is it really considered stainless?

Thanks for all your help despite my confusion.

CPM 3V makes an excellent blade...several very respectable knifemakers use it. But it is NOT stainless. CPM S30V is considered by some to be the "stainless version of CPM 3V". According to Jerry Hossom, it is not as tough as CPM 3V though and I would believe him. He also says that both will take a very fine edge due to the refined grain. I believe that CPM 3V will take a finer edge. Again, this is according to what I've heard. Expect to pay more for CPM 3V if you make knives in time and belts, it's very tough. Same goes if you plan to buy one, since somebody else will have to spend the time and money on the extra belts.
