CPM-D2 sharpening

So I've had this D2 Paramilitary for a few months now and it's knocked all my other knives out of my pocket for 2 main reasons:

1.) It's a perfect size/weight for EDC
2.) I was interested to try out the CPM-D2

It was screaming sharp when I received it and it's held a respectable edge for the past 3 or so months of daily use. It won't shave hair any longer, but it opens packages and mail without snagging. Very impressive edge-holding. My other highwear stainless knives would be snagging by now. I haven't cut anything tough - just cardboard, food prep [vegetables & meat], plastic, mail, packages, occasional loose string. Typical stuff. But it was time to sharpen it up. Based on my experiences with plain D2, I wasn't really looking forward to the next hour or 2 on the Sharpmaker to get it back up to speed.

To my surprise, the Paramilitary sharpened right up! Holy hell it's sharp now. About 6-7 minutes on the brown stones [40 degrees inclusive] and it was popping hair easily. I finished it up on the ultra fine's and this thing is scary sharp.

Very impressive! I guess it all depends on what the bevels were set at from the factory [if I had to guess, probably 16-18 degrees per side]. Other knives I own in non-particle D2 are noticeably thicker at the edge, and as a result, noticeably more of a pain in the ass to sharpen. This CPM-D2 was a pleasure to sharpen.

 To Sal & company for letting us test this steel out. It's a shame that Crucible discontinued it. It's fantastic stuff.

A reminder: keep your stones CLEAN. I hadn't cleaned mine in about 6 months and they were totally clogged with steel residue. I couldn't even get some soft 420HC sharp on them. A toothbrush and some Bar Keeper's Friend fixed that.

Ive had the same experience with my D2 Para. I try to sharpen my D2 Benchmade 710 and its MUCH more difficult and time consuming and never seems to get as sharp as my Para. I really need to get the bevel right on it as I think its much too steep.

I agree that the cpm-D2 is very nice. Holds an edge very well and sharpens right up with little fuss.
