i have a great deal from a friend of mine, he will sell me one(just one) of his spyderco mules in these steels for almost nothing. is one better than the other or will i never be able to tell? thanks for any help!

I'd go with the S35VN as it is less common right now than M4 (which you can get in the Gayle Bradley right now).

I think CPM M4 will be the better using steel - difficult to sharpen but it holds an edge a LOOONG time.

S35VN is not on any production knives, CPM-M4 is on many.

S35VN seems to take a finer edge but M4 is right behind it and better in edge holding.

S35VN is stainless and M4 is high speed tool steel that you will have to maintain.

Couldn't have said it any better.

the m4 has a proven test record, can take very acute bevel, cuts foreverr, & not brittle. all the cutting contestants use m4. however in real life only about a 15% difference or less.
