I'm soon going to be heading off to either West Point or an ROTC program on a full ride and I would like to take a combat knife with me that I can have and use the rest of my life. Does anyone know of any makers that are willing to work with CPM M4? From what I've been told it is not an easy undertaking but I would like to have an edge that is as sharp as possible for me use obviously, which as I understand M4 is very good at taking and keeping. Does anyone know where the blade competitors get theirs or a knife maker that is able and willing to turn out an M4 blade suited for both combat and utility?

what shapr are you looking for and what use do you think it will get them nmost of
im a fan of cpm3V for combat utility blades as at 60Rc you still have great edge holding and dependig on the blade profile the ability to pry a wood door off its hinges

other thoughts are the face that you likly not going to be able to have your own knife while at school

I'm not worried about any knife restrictions and am looking for mostly a drop point style something along the lines of the spartan horkos but once I'm with the maker so issues can be sorted out. It won't require a crazy blade shape or anything extremely odd so it doesn't require the most perfect machinist you have ever seen. It will mostly be used for general field utility and general field combat.

CPM M4 is definitly what you want. 3v is good but M4 is better the wear resistance is incredible. don't know about anybody too make it though

I believe that Warren Osborne uses this steel for his cutting competition knives so you might try to contact him.

go to the one of a kind gallery. the knife in question there is not of your requested steel but is of a type of knife you desire I would think and then ask Warren if he could use what you want. Warren just recently began to do some more fixed blades after years of doing folders.

An early FB by WO is this one

again with the steel you want and a nice sheath, this would be perfect for your needs.

I've been making some cpm m-4 san mai. Stainless 410 over the cpm m-4. It has even greater strength because of the softer outer layers. Also I've been making more knives lately.

Send me a PM if your interested

Even though I haven't used it, I'm sure that M4 will make a quality blade but to be truthfull so will several others. I think that you will find that the quality of a blade has more to do with how it is heat treated than it does the type of steel. There are a number of steels that will make quality blades and I would rather have one of a steel that the maker uses and H/T's every day.
Alloy steels like M4 gain advantages from the different metals alloyed with the steel, each with it's own characteristics. But there are things that can be done with simple HC steels that can't be done with the high alloys as well.

I guess that I am recommending that you pick a quality maker and trust him to make you a blade to fit your needs rather than picking a steel.
