Hey Dan

Have you considered offering any of your bushcraft / wilderness type blades in CPM M4???

I've made a few blades from M4, but I'm not sure a scandi grind would be much fun to sharpen in that steel. It has a crazy high amount of vanadium in it (4%) and the wear resistance would make sharpening a scandi grind very laborious.

Here's a chart for comparison:

I would definitely consider it for the WSS knives and maybe the MUCK or Bushmaster, though. Perhaps a limited run? It has a pretty good following with knifemakers (seems to be "on the rise")....but I get such good feedback on 3V steel it's hard to want to use much else.

I hear ya. I love my CPM M4 Gayle Bradley. A tool steel that is as tough as O1 or A2 (not CPM 3V of course) but has a higher wear resistance. To me its... uhm music to my ears :)

Sign me up for a limited run of what ever you choose...

I am really warming up to the idea of the BushMaster in M4. With a stone-tumbled finish - that would be a heckuva knife...practically scratch resistant surface...super extended edge-holding...and if I left the grind a tad thick at the edge (0.040" or so) - would be a great performer overall.

Dan -- another thought would be to do a CPM-M4 version of the Flat Ground Bushcraft. With a shorter blade the extreme toughness of 3V probably isn't as critical, but the edge holding would be much appreciated. I'd be all over that too.

damnit, put me down for a flat ground stonewashed CPM M4 bushmaster. That has to rock as a SHTF knife.

Not to sound like a party crusher or unbelieving Thomas but after I used my Spyderco Military in M4 I would vote for the 3V without reservations. The thing with M4 is that it gets super nice edge but is much less corrosion resistant than 3V, thus if you cut some fruits or expose it to water the edge is gone fast. See comparison vs Koster 3v after similar amount of use below. Thus, if you are at home and have time to care of the M4 by all means go for it but for the outdoors I would personally prefer 3V. Also Koster has a lot of experience with 3v if he switches to M4 do you want to be the guinea pig :)
