I was wondering if cpm Rex 121 steel would make a good heavy chopper and if it does, would it be better than a 1075-95 or tool steel chopper, or u have another metal that would work better please tell me. I was looking at the crucibles info on the stuff and they made it sound like some pretty magical stuff, and Im getting into making my own blades, so quality is pretty important

I believe the heat treat on 121 is difficult and the steel can be chippy. I would start with a more basic tough steel. Even cpm 3v can be a real pain to grind for your first knife, ask me how I know!

No, it's super high wear resistance and low toughness. It would be a terrible chopper. If the blade sustains damage then fixing it would be difficult/time consuming.

I agree very much so with fanglekai. It offers no advantage I can perceive for a chopper.

I would start with something simple like 5160 or 1084 so that if you have issues you have not spent a lot of money at the start.

Both are very good steel for any knife, but especially a chopper, and a good starting place. Heck, even if you never "progress" past them, a lot of really talented makers have made a lot of really amazing knives out of those steels.

Thx guys the stuff is pretty expensive I probably go with 5160, was looking at the prices and I was surprised how cheap it is
